Briefly, in my experience we can always work around library/install problems if we don't use packaged software, but the converse is not true... That having been said, bioconda is something we're starting to work a lot more with and so maybe we'll use that? Not sure.
Maybe this is not the right place, but anyway...
I'm curious about your not using Linuxbrew for package management. Last time I taught something similar, I did. It was fine, but students didn't get much exposure to installing things manually via
./configure
andmake
. On the other hand, I'm not sure how important that is, given there are so many easy(ier) ways to install software these days..Interested in people's thoughts about this.
