refined ask would be better as: "want to be give learners the ability to do lessons 1-9 w/as easy a UX as possible - so, minimal configuration, etc."

so far, options to explore include:

aws lightsail
digitalocean droplets (free w/github developer pack!)
cyverse (academic cloud)
linode, vultr, inmotion, etc.

Interesting but not quite on target -

AWS cloud9 looks like a solution for developers, and supports full IDE.
google colab, doesn't support ssh in

things to evaluate -

password login and pref ssh key generation
ability to configure base instance, e.g. install conda
