File Transfer To iPad DOESN'T WORK #172

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Run "FROTZ" On iPad 2
2. FILE TRANSFER
3. Go To This Website On My Computer: http://10.143.52.239:8000

What is the expected output or behavior?
> I expect to to see the FROTZ FILE TRANSFER website that I , surpringly so,
can see on my iPad's browser
but NOT on my MacBook's browser.

What do you see instead?
> A BLANK page that says: SAFARI CANNOT LOAD THIS PAGE, ETC., ETC.

What version of Frotz are you using?
> 1.5.3

What device model are you using (iPhone 3GS, iPad, iPod Touch 3rd gen,
etc.)
> iPad 2

What version of iOS? 3.2, 4.0, 4.3, etc.)
> 5.0

Please provide any additional information below.

I follow the directions TO THE LETTER & it doesn't work.
Like I say, I can see the HTTP website just fine on my iPad 2 but NOT where it
counts -- the MacBook.
What I *do* see is a blank screen with the CANNOT LOAD PAGE errormessage.

Please help!!!

Thank you.

I know of no problems running File Transfer in Frotz on an iPad 2 running IOS
5.0
I just verified it works fine for me.

I suspect either your MacBook is not connected to the same Wi-Fi network as
your iPad, or you have some sort of firewall on your network blocking the
connection.

> Of course not, but me .... ? Sure, why *would* it work for *me* ....

I just verified it works fine for me.
> Of course it does .... You see, the UniVerse sees I am about to experience
something IMMENSELY pleasureable -- using my favorite software [InfoCom games]
on my favorite hardware [the iPad 2] -- so it says: "We can't have that! Make
something that works for everyone else NOT work for Cary ...."
I'm not joking, by the way.
This's happened much too many times for it to be an "unrelated coincidence".
Ever see 'Master & Commander" with Russell Crowe?
I'm the textbook definition of a "Jonah" .....

I suspect either your MacBook is not connected to the same Wi-Fi network as
your iPad ....
> It most definately is.

... or you have some sort of firewall on your network blocking the connection.
> Nope, not at all.
As I say, on Safari for iPad 2, it's perfect -- but on Safari for my MacBook,
it's no go.

And thank you for the quick response, by the way.

What's the IP address of your Mac Book? Check under System Preferences ->
Network, click on Wi-Fi in the pane on the left, and look on the right after
Status, it should say something wi-fi is connected and give your IP address.

Verify the first 3 digits are the same as what Frotz on your IPad 2 reports
(10.143.52.X).
Another thing to try is to verify that your iPad 2 is reachable on the network
from your MacBook at all.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Network Utility and go to the 'Ping' tab. Type in
the IP address Frotz gives you (without the http//: and :8000 parts) and click
Ping. You should see a repeated message saying that data was sent and giving
timings.

By the way, although I don't know why this isn't working for you and will try
my best to help you get it working, there are other ways to get Infocom games
into Frotz besides File Transfer.

For example, you can email the files to yourself, then open the message in Mail
on the ipad, tap on the attachment and select 'Open In...' Frotz.
If you have Dropbox, you can also put them in your Dropbox and launch Frotz by
open them from the Dropbox app (also using 'Open in...').

What's the IP address of your MacBook?
> According to WhatsMyIP.Com, it's: 24.186.83.245

Verify the first 3 digits are the same as what Frotz on your iPad 2 reports.
> Well, well, well -- whaddaya know ....
Now that I may be close to a possible solution, it doesn't work now on
Safari for iPad 2, *either*.
   What a *surprise* ....
With regards to pinging, I'll do that later as just right now a vein is
throbbing -- nothing against *you* guys, of course!  lol -- and should ONE
WRONG KEYPRESS happen right now, I'm afaid I'll throw my MacBook through the
window.

And the "eMail It To MySelf" thingie?
Sure, why not ....
Right now, I'm so desperate, I'd sell my Soul to Ol' Beezlebub 'imself, I
would, if: A] I had a Soul & B] There actually *was* a Beezlebub.
But, all of that notwithstanding, I'll give it the ol' college try, I will.
Just a sec ....
Mother Of Sweet Holy Jesus in Heaven above ....
IT WORKS!!  IT WORKS!! IT WORKS !!!

Sure, I see someone earlier says they're having trouble with "Arthur",
"Sherlock Holmes & The Riddle Of The Crown Jewels" and "Journey" -- three of
the games I want the modt, by the way -- and later read how one of the devs
says they're gonna get working on remedying that, but I am *absolutely* willing
to "settle" for "A Mind Forever Voyaging".

How can I thank you, except to say ....

** THANK YOU !!!  **

Glad you got it working.

If you want to continue to diagnose the File Transfer problem, we can, or if
you're happy with this, that's fine too.

By the way, you can't use WhatsMyIP.com because that'll give the IP address of
your router/cable modem -- IP addresses assigned by your router via NAT to
devices in your home are local and not visible on the other side of the router,
so that doesn't help trouble shoot the problem. You have to look in the place
I told you in Sys Prefs.

There's no "you guys", just me. Frotz for iOS is a one man hobby.

Arthur, Shogun, Journey and Zork Zero are V6 games and aren't currently
supported, although they may be at some time in the future. Sherlock should
work fine. Beyond Zork may have weird drawing issues with the map, but
otherwise works. All other games work great as far as I know, except sound
isn't supported in Lurking Horror and someone reported issues with the
real-time updating status line in one part of Border Zone.

> I didn't mention I'm using a public library's WiFi -- is that meaningful?

> KUDOS, Sir!

V6 games and aren't currently supported, although they may be at some time in
the future.
> Sweet!  Yeah, I forgot to mention "Zork Zero".

Sherlock should work fine.
> Ah -- goid to know, good to know.

Lastly, I SO agree with the guy who knows the author of "Arthur" [ha ha ....]
-- Activision, like ATARI did with *it's* arcade games, should bundle all the
InfoCom games into one app [can't be more than a couple dozen megs in total] &
bring it to iOS.
Or sell the app with a couple of freebies inside, say the "ZORK" trilogy, then
sell the rest as categorical [Mystery, Science Fiction, etc., etc.] downloads
or each game a la carte.

Have a nice day!
