We felt that it was unnecessary when places could still be identified without these special characters.

Reason for disagreement: I agree that places may still be identified without such special characters, but this would definitely cause inconvenience to users (e.g., using Bugis Plus instead of Bugis+ might be misleading if the user actually tries to find the place, maybe through Google, and gets confused about where to go), hence the low severity rating. Perhaps experienced tour guides are able to navigate their way easily and know places by heart, but I assume that this also caters to inexperienced tour guides who may not be as familiar with the names of places.
There are some attractions that do contain such non-alphanumeric characters, and while having only alphanumeric characters does help with regex validation, I think it makes it harder for the user to input certain attractions.
