We didn't get a chance to discuss this at the November Style Council meeting so I've put it on the agenda for December instead.
At December Style Council we agreed to add a note to say that:
"If it’s helpful to include the day of the week, for example for users booking appointments, we write dates like this: Wednesday 6 August 2018."
The notes from the Style Council will need clinical approval and then we can publish this change.
Sent to NHS.UK clinicians for sign off.
Published in the style guide.
What
We would like to add the day of the week to the dates section of Numbers, measurements, dates and time in the service manual.
Why
In the NHS App we use the 'day' + 'date' format to confirm the date a user has selected or is selecting. For example, when a user has ordered a prescription or when selecting a date to book an appointment.
We believe this aids the user in understanding when the event happened or when the event is going to happen in proximity to the current day, i.e. today is Monday, the appointment is for Wednesday.
This format also removes cognitive load for the user in having to think about what day a specific date is, and allows users to quickly and easily identify when a task or event occurred.
As services grow across the NHS, we see this being a helpful addition to the service manual relating directly to selecting or viewing dates in the near future or past.
