What

https://github.com/nhsuk/image-gallery-prototype contains an image gallery implementation useful for showing pictures of symptoms such as skin rashes. (Initial development I believe was done by @cameronross2)

Why

We are looking to use this on 111 online for essentially the same use case - to help people answer the questions on 111 online with increased accuracy by showing them pictures of the symptoms relevant to a given question. I am not aware of anything currently in the service manual / frontend library that serves this need.

We are coming towards the build phase for this and rather than borrowing/forking/adapting the code from this prototype we are keen that we might be able to create a common component that suits the needs of 111 online as well as the original on nhs.uk.

I anticipate that our delivery might move faster than we are able to get this component into nhsuk-frontend - but hopefully if we start the conversation now we can head in that direction. Even if we initially ship with a "local copy" of the code and move to an nhsuk-frontend version later.

We have conducted user research where this has tested well thus far, and more is planned. I can't comment on the user research undertaken for the original component - perhaps someone from this team might be able to chip in.

@cameronross2, just checking you're aware of this.

andymantell commented 3 years ago

thanks @sarawilcox - we've had a chat with Cameron's team. This is probably not something that's quite ready to go in as a shared component yet, after our discussion. But I think this issue could probably stay here for recording any findings with a view to maybe one day sharing it.

sarawilcox commented 3 years ago

That's fine @andymantell. I'm just conscious that @cameronross2 is looking at something similar.

Thanks Sara. It's something we're still working on for nhs.uk. When we're ready to share with Service Manual, I'll come back to this issue to update. It's worth noting @prembonsall was the developer who built the gallery in our team.

A real-world example of how images for certain topics on the NHS website only show white people and result in black and brown people not knowing what visual symptoms to look for: https://twitter.com/MumsandTea/status/1455263489619025923

The image gallery proposal could help Make content about skin symptoms more inclusive #181

A real-world example of how the current images on the NHS website are all of white people and result in black and brown people not knowing what visual symptoms to look for: https://twitter.com/MumsandTea/status/1455263489619025923

I'm afraid this isn't quite accurate, since we've added inclusive imagery to more than a dozens topics this year and created inclusive written content for at least 50 topics related to skin symptoms. This is an unfortunate example where an image on brown skin was not available from our small pool of approved suppliers, or not clinically approved for use, hence we were unable to include an image on brown or black skin when it was reviewed. It's a constant struggle to source imagery, and we continue to work at it. The written content on this page, however, is inclusive, and one image on the page is of a Southeast Asian child with light brown skin.

Ah apologies, @sarahallen57 my comment was off and it's amazing to hear about good work being done to get more inclusive imagery added to many topics. I didn't mean to infer that all images on the NHS websites are of only white people and have edited my comment accordingly.

A version of this is being tested in the chickenpox page on the NHS website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/chickenpox/.

What https://nhsd-confluence.digital.nhs.uk/display/CIT/User+research+-+inclusive+content Contains a summary of the work we have done in the space of inclusive description of skin symptoms, looking at the gallery component and how best to implement it in our pages.

Why We are looking to use this on NHS.UK pages that require the representation of skin symptoms through various skin colours and long description to aid those with visual impairments. This is to help people see their issues with increased accuracy by showing them pictures of the symptoms relevant to their need.

We have done majority of the testing and are coming towards the implementation phase of this so that next we can test its performance. Please do have a read of the summary and if you require more information feel free to clink the links of the sections and dive deeper.
