At October 2022 Style Council meeting, we approved the following entry for the style guide A to Z. Still needs clinical approval.
Do not use "perinatal". In our user research, most people did not use the term "perinatal". Instead they refer to "pregnancy" and the stage of their pregnancy.
If you need to use "perinatal" because users will come across the word, explain what it means, depending on the content. In most cases, it means the time you are pregnant and up to 12 months after giving birth.
Perinatal mental health teams also offer support to people with mental health problems when they are planning to get pregnant.
Approved by clinicians. Preparing to publish.
SEO research by our suppliers showed that perinatal is mostly used by clinicians. Also policy makers and academics.
Users often include a reference to ‘pregnancy’ or ‘pregnant’ and also the specific stage of pregnancy eg. ‘postnatal’ Users often search for a specific mental health condition, symptom or feeling, e.g. depression.
Most of the charities in this sector use the language "before, during and after pregnancy" or similar.
Our user research backed this up -- nobody used the term perinatal when talking about the content or expected to see it there.
Prefer “Find care for your mental health before, during and after pregnancy”
