On many NHS.UK pages about breastfeeding we refer to a breastfeeding specialist as a type of support people can get (alongside midwives and health visitors). However one of our clinicians has suggested that the preferred term on a lot of charity websites (e.g. NCT, ABM and La Leche) is 'breastfeeding counsellor'.
Some comments so far:
The use of 'specialists' may concern users that something serious is wrong with their baby.
Does the term "counsellor" suggest counselling?
An alternative is "breastfeeding supporter", esp if support is provided by peer supporters.
We're not aware of any contact from people about 'breastfeeding specialist' being a confusing term
