We tested the feature card component with users when developing a content type for procedure topics (as part of the broader transformation project). The feature card component was used on the ileostomy topic in the 'what happens' aspect to distinguish between the 2 types of ileostomy procedure (see screenshot below). Although users were not asked directly about their experience of the feature cards, they responded positively to the content on this page, saying the information was 'good and informative' and that it was 'useful to see the different types of operation'. Users were also able to easily explain in their own words the difference between the 2 types of ileostomy. Some users only focused on the type that was relevant to them, potentially highlighting a good use case for the cards, as users can easily skim and find the information relevant to them while ignoring content that doesn't apply.
Other procedure topics highlighted as good potential use cases for feature cards include weight loss surgery (several different types of surgery available) and laser eye surgery.
Discussed in the NHS.UK senior content team. We think there are some issues with this pattern but will be looking at users' needs in searching for info about different treatments/procedures and their behaviour as part of our discovery into a secondary care content type.

Why
(Someone to explain, please)
Explain why you think we should add this to the NHS digital service manual.
Background
Feature cards have been used on the NHS website previously but are not an approved component.
We have an example in the frontend library, but without any guidance on when and how to use it. The plan was to keep it in as a component which could be used in the 'Do and don't list' and 'Health A-Z' patterns.
Examples
NHS website treatment card, for example, in procedures content - experimental

Upcoming work
The NHS.UK content team is looking at a discovery around a secondary care content type which might involve the use of treatment cards to allow users to compare treatments. Further research needed.
