Revisit the lede text on the patterns and components landing pages.

One idea is to combine the "best bits" of the current lede text in the NHS digital service manual with the explanation of patterns on the patterns page in the GOV.UK Design System.

It could work something like this:

Patterns are best practice design solutions and page types to meet specific user needs, which are common for health and care services. You can reuse them across NHS services to make them more consistent. Patterns often use one or more components and explain how to adapt them to the context.

Something about patterns being specific ways to use components. Look at GOV.UK components and patterns page.

Note: NHSD patterns section is still in its infancy. Designers tend to use components but refer to GOV.UK design system for patterns we don't have. Encourage people to check patterns first and then use NHS components following GDS patterns if we don't have the pattern they need.

Link from our components page to patterns.

I think there's a lot of confusion in the naming of parts across design systems in general. At the moment, your 'patterns' page just sort of ends - there are no links to follow once I've read the opening salvo, and I wouldn't be able to discover that there are GDS patterns available.

I like your proposed explanation, and I'd also like:

Thanks Caroline. Yes, with a link to GDS patterns and an indication of what people might find there. There are a lot of patterns we don't currently have and we want people to be aware of them, to use them and to feedback to us. So we need to spell that out.

The NHS patterns are already there in the side nav. Is that what you meant?
