In #2189 several of our listboxes were updates to show a max height of 10.5 options (combobox and listbox) and some listboxes were kept at showing 5.5 options (rich text).
We should capture guidance on when listboxes should be 10.5 options tall or 5.5 options tall.
Discussing with @fredvisser some guidelines are:
Show 10.5 options when:
The options are shown in a simple order, i.e. alphabetized, and likely need to scroll though a set of options to pick from
The workflow is discovery (i.e. probably am not aware of all workspaces that exist or all members in each team)
Grouping is being used
Show 5.5 options when:
The options shown are in a prioritized / relevance order, the user knows what they want, it's likely a recent option / the first or second option consistently
The workflow is picking a known option as quickly as possible (i.e. filtering, recents, etc let the user consistently choose one of the first or second options)
Grouping is not used
Currently we expect combobox and select to be used for "discovery" use cases and rich text user mention is a "picking" use case.
We may need issues / future work for:
Rich text improving picking UX behavior, i.e. typing "mar" should show a name like "mark" first instead of "amarillo" (ordering does not lend to picking the first option often)
Select and Combobx may need to be able to support "picking" workflow. i.e. sophisticated ordering and filtering and showing fewer options.
