What is a deep link? Is it an absolute URL?

I just read about it and I wonder if deep linking is the correct term here...
I see the definition of deep linking as referring to a link from your website
to another website going to a specific page instead of the main page of the
site. The controversy here being that you skip the home page. I don't think
you are pointing outside of the site with what your are doing so I guess it is
just an absolute URL? Just trying to understand.

I mean ensuring that entities within the system, when displayed, are links
rather than just text. For example showing a coach name always is a link to
that coach's home page.
The site should carry more links to enable people to navigate around easily.

This issue was updated by revision r850.
Fixed problem with class_tournament.php where it generated errors if the league
tables module was not enabled.
Reapplied class_htmlout.php changes. I thought I'd updated and merged,
obviously not. Apologies.
