North Carolina Campus Voting Coalition Request #90

Closed jgy4 closed 2 years ago

jgy4 commented 2 years ago

Hi @nickeubank @adrianefresh ! We received a request from Kiani Gardner about presenting our work for the NC Campus Voting Coalition in January, or sharing some of our data. We wanted to run this by you both and get your thoughts - I've copied the email text below!

Email Text

Dapo, Jasmine, and Pranav,

First off, I want to congratulate you all again on such great work as was presented last week. I really enjoyed hearing about your research.

I was mentioning some of the highlights to the North Carolina Campus Voting Coalition at our meeting yesterday, and all of our participants were very interested to hear more about your NC data. We are particularly interested in knowing which NC campuses you all have identified as having the lowest access to polling places for students. As we plan our organizing strategy for 2022, this type of data would be so valuable.

I wonder if you would be interested in sharing some of your research with our coalition at our January meeting. I know it's a big ask. Otherwise, maybe you would share some of your NC data set.

Again, well done on your research. I hope you all have a smooth end of the semester and a lovely holiday break.

Hi All,

This is great---people in this space really care about what you're doing! It shows how even these basic statistics are things that organizers simply don't have.

I am going to guess that there will be limits on what we can share, but I'm not sure of the details. Those will depend somewhat on the contract Duke Signed with the +1 group/Viacom. It is possible that some of the high level numbers that you've collected could be shared, though even if that is possible under the contract, I think being a good citizen here means running it by Vaughan first. And it surely also means getting her the numbers she wants first, and then asking about how to share NC-specific versions with this group. It's possible too that Vaughan would want to share through Viacom rather than through you if the contract gives her that power.

In terms of the data, I doubt we can or should share original data that has come from +1 or Ballot Ready via the project. We can direct them to other sources that we have downloaded as part of our work but which a +1 member didn't provide us directly. And I think we can share what our sources are---i.e., "we have the best early voting data from Ballot Ready, but you would need to reach out to them directly." That sort of thing.

I'll let Nick weigh in next. Overall, I think we should try to help, but I think there are likely to be constraints here. You can tell them this general answer and say you'll get back to them with more soon.

Cheers, Adriane

This is terrific!

As Adriane mentioned, youll need to check with Vaughan / Alex about sharing raw polling place locations, but I definitely think you can (and should!) share your results and share with them information about which colleges you think have more or less access to public places (along with distances, etc.)

adrianefresh commented 2 years ago

Just to be clear Nick, the contract between Viacom and Duke gives the students ownership of findings produced from their work (that they can share), not Viacom? It's one thing to own those results for purposes of class projects and presentations, but I want to make sure they also own them insofar as they can disseminate them.

There are no restrictions on products of their work — it’s all open. I think sharing the raw data from Alex may be an issue (more informally than formally), but we’ve moved to a no-restrictions legal framework for capstones to avoid messy issues around students showing off their work.

But might good idea to run by Vaughan just to be good citizens?

I think for being good citizens we also need to provide the Vaughan numbers first

Also agree full heartedly -- I think you can check on what you can share with these folks, but don't do anything for them till you're done with the Jan press release.

jgy4 commented 2 years ago

Thank you both! We'll be sure to run it by Vaughan, but in the meantime make sure we prioritize the press release numbers.
