Add back logging after application-driven design shift #128

Describe the issue:

This is a child of #124. Re-adding logging should be a priority since "libraries not logging" is no longer an issue.

Due to #135 and #138, this issue will be closed for the time being. If issues arise indicating that logging is needed again, then we will re-add logging.
