Because it does not support transparent background !

And because in the end it does not look like a good idea (the way it's implemented is just a MD5 of an e-mail so "spam-party !")...

Very first short list (may be enhanced) :

libravatar
- "Federated Open Source Service" (they say)
- supported by fedora ?
- hosting for ivatar ?
- seems to be the defacto gravatar alternative
- allows SHA256, which looks OK for today, but will it hold in 5-10 years of quantum computing ?
