Hi Nicole!

You successfully reshaped and plotted the gapminder data. I'm not such a fan of using bar graphs for time series data, but I liked the breaks that you set up so that only years where data was present were included.

You successfully joined data from a source that you cited to the gapminder data and then explored all of the different types of joins with commentaries about how you did it. I think it would be more interesting to see data that would actually complement the data in the gapminder set (for instance Worldbank economic data, or WHO health data) but the examples they gave us in the instructions were pretty much irrelevant so you can't be faulted for that. Also, I sympathize with how long it took to find any data and then import it!

You additionally explored the merge function and then reflected on the process.

Everything was very well organized and super easy to follow! Great work!

I really liked your repo, it was well organized and really easy to understand. In the first part of the homework I used the same plot structure so I understand that it was a little trickier because of the new shape of the table.

In the second part you explored several joins which were great and you reflected on several parts. Sorry I cannot help with some of your question.

Overall I think it was really good work!!

Hi @nicolehawe, here are some comments about your hw04:

• Nice job using spread! You were able to successfully obtain a data frame with one row per year and one column per continent using spread. You are correct that it is usually better to create a plot using long form data rather than wide form data. The scatterplot that you produced could be done with much less work if you used long form data. However, an example of a plot that is easier with wide form data is where you have the median life expectancies of one continent on the y-axis and the life expectancies of another continent on the x-axis.
• You provided good examples of how to use each type of join. You did a pretty thorough job of trying different ways to use joins although I think it could have used some more explanation. . I think that it would have been better if you added a bit more about how the “by” argument affects the join. It may be apparent in your example, but it should still be mentioned.
• Nice work overall, your coding style was neat and efficient. Your repo was well organized. You provided good explanations and examples in your report. Good work!
