i've got jon thinking about how to do this.  key features: 
-transparent
-cheap to build many
-non corroding grill floor (id'd $30/sqft stainless steel stuff on mcmaster)
-easy to take mouse in/out
-easy to clean (autoclave?)
-easy to mount sensors
