Hi!
The complication is still available. I'm currently working on getting background updates to work with it. But I should work to have it as a link to jump to the nightguard app.
What version of the App do you have? What do you see when selecting "Info" on the apple watch?
Hi Dirk. Current version on watch is watchOS 4.1. Great to hear you’re working on the background for the complication.
And what Version is the Nightguard App you are running on the watch? You can see it when force-pressing and then selecting "Info".
Sorry, missed that first time. Version is V1.5.0.131
Ok - that's fine. At least you should have the nightscout complication with this Version. Please double check that. That the app doesn't stay as the active application on the watch, will have something to do with the series 1. This watch has some problems with the chart painting. It has not enough cpu power to display it. Series 2 has much more power.
So I would guess that the app crashes occasionally and therefore looses it's active state. There is no easy way for me to fix to that. Sorry.
Hi Dirk, Just to circle back with you on this. I picked up a series 3 Apple watch recently and having similar issues with the app crashing and defaulting back to the standard watch face. Tried many things such as....paired and repaired several times, turned Background App Refresh off for all other apps, wake screen to 'Always' show last app. Really love the features on your nightguard watch app...do you have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!
Hi!
How long did it take for the app to close?
You can send me your email and could try the current beta version. I would think that you have some crashes that stops the watch app.
You can choose to send crash reports. Maybe that gives us some insights.
If you have Dev experience you could pair your watch and run it in debugger mode.
Hope this helps... NightscoutLS notifications@github.com schrieb am Mi. 20. Dez. 2017 um 04:43:

Hi Dirk,
Thank you. Would love to try the Beta version..... email address is deleted
The app closing is intermittent, sometimes it stays active for a few seconds and drops, other times it stays for an hour or more.
Thanks again!

Hi!
I added you and will prepare the latest master as Version 1.5.1 for you. But I'm not sure how fast apple lets you access it, since they closed their app store due to holiday season ;-)
Merry christmas, dirk
Hello, looks like I am experiencing the same problem, here is the video that shows apps crashing constantly and returning me to the watchface: https://goo.gl/keHcFQ. I will be glad to test the beta version as well if you give me access to it.
Ah - thanks for the video. That is something completely different I thought we were talking about. As I can see in the video, you are using the IOB Feature. That is something that not easily testable for me.
Can you send me an URI with read access to your backend when the issue is reproducible?
Please send to issue24.hermanns at spamgourmet.com
I will try to debug it.

Hello Everyone!
I am setting up a series 2 Apple Watch and the Nightscouter complication doesn’t update at all - using the “modular” watchface. The Nightguard complication doesn’t even show up as in option when selecting the modules. Would absolutely love some guidance on this.
Thanks for your time and attention.
Kind regards,
Steph
Nightscouter is another app that is not maintained here. Nightguard doesn‘t support background updates right now. So the complication is nothing more than a link to the app.
But the current beta version displays at least the values you have seen in the nightguard watch app.
I can add your email to the beta group if you would like to have a look at it.
Yes please!
I realized after I posted that I needed to tap it, but then couldn’t find the thread again . Sigh.
Thank you,
Steph

I‘ve created a build 141. Could someone here with a 38mm watch have a look it this can be installed successfully there?
One user has problems with installation and we would like to know whether this is a general issue.
This build is available for TestFlight right now.
Hi Dirk,
My wife has a 38mm watch i can test on. Can you add her to the beta version? Her email is xxxxxx@xxxxx.
Thanks.

Seems a little better however still experiencing some crashes at times. Sometimes I just need to relaunch on the watch again although there are other times when it just keeps dropping as soon as I launch...when this happens I ‘uninstall’ then ‘reinstall’ nightguard on the watch.

Does someone else had problems installing Build 143? The installation still stops for the watch for one user.
Build 143 and 144 both installed fine on my 38 mm Series 2. I didn't find 143 improved stability, it still unloads intermittently when the watch screen is turned off, but I only tested 143 for a few hours. I'll report back on 144 after I've used it more. I really miss the IOB, but I understand you've removed it for troubleshooting and hope you can find the problem so IOB can be reinstated!
Build 144 stability report: 18:21 Put Nightguard in front. 18:48 Still loaded. 19:23 Still loaded. 19:42 Had to restart. 19:43 Had to restart. 19:44 Still loaded. 19:47 Still loaded. 19:49 Still loaded. 20:03 Still loaded. 20:05 Still loaded. 20:08 Still loaded. 20:57 Had to restart. 21:05 Still loaded. 21:13 Still loaded. 21:41 Had to restart. 22:02 Still loaded. 22:20 Had to restart.
My experience today has been similar to Jonas' above with build 144. Occasionally dropping from the watch and requiring me to reload.
What is your behavior with other watchOS Apps? I don’t have any crash reports in TestFlight, so it has to be the case that watchOS closes the app. E.g. to save battery.
Personally I really only use the watch for the Nightguard App :-) and don't use other apps as much. For me, prior to the iOS 11 update the app was working great and never experienced the 'dropping' issue, it has only occurred since the iOS update late last year. I have turned all my background app refresh 'off' for other apps to help with the battery preservation, not sure what else I could try.
I don't use any other watch apps. I have some loaded, but not actively using them.
The first hours was with Low Power Mode Off, the last were with Low Power Mode On. Didn't seem to make any difference...
Could you try to install a different watchOS app and let me know how that stays in foreground? Jonas Hummelstrand notifications@github.com schrieb am Di. 16. Jan. 2018 um 23:00:

I had the BBC News app loaded on my watch all day while at work, no concerns with dropping...stayed active as my watchface all day.
Switched back to Nightguard this evening and dropped several times. Let me know if there is any other info I can provide or test I can do.
Thanks

Neptun (showing BG values from Apple Health) disappeared two times during the entire day yesterday.
Today I've had Apple's Activity loaded the entire day, it only disappeared once after I took the watch off for 10 minutes.
Please let us know what else you want us to test, happy to help out!
I never read about it, but the only thing I could imagine is that Apple stops Apps if they are consuming too much battery.
If the app crashes, that would be the other possibility, I should get a crash report. But till now I didn’t got a single one.
We could harden the first theory by building a mock app that doesn’t consume much battery. That should stay in foreground state much longer afterwards. What do you think? Jonas Hummelstrand notifications@github.com schrieb am Do. 18. Jan. 2018 um 20:51:

I loaded the “SVT Nyheter” (the Swedish equivalent of BBC News) app yesterday evening, and it faithfully stayed in the foreground, showing me new stories every time I looked.
If you build an app where we could set the power usage ourselves, we could start with a low value and then raise it every day. A logging function showing you how many times the screen was active would give you better data than our anecdotal reports. I’d happily wear that if it helps! Another way would be to strip out lots of functionality in nightguard to see what causes it to unload.
Yes - I will create a completely stripped build, just to see if the theory is correct. Jonas Hummelstrand notifications@github.com schrieb am Fr. 19. Jan. 2018 um 07:41:

Hello Sir!
So - I have the test flight version of the app on my phone, the complication shows up on my list of complications, but when I use the modular watch face, the complication doesn’t show up as an option. Clearly I am missing a step?
Thanks,

I have this issue as well. The app isn't crashing, you can return to the app by selecting it from the app switcher. For me, when I upgraded to watchOS 4, nightguard kept getting removed from the foreground and replaced by the audio controls. After turning off handoff, the audio controls don't appear, but the app continues to exit the foreground randomly.
The audio control is a good point. Could you try to snooze the ios app for the maximum amount of time and look what happens?
I played with background updates. Maybe the app tries to play alerts which lets watchos remove the app to prepare the audio controls.
@dhermanns Well its still happening even with all of that stuff disabled. As others have pointed out, other apps don't get removed from the foreground. The timer app for example will stay open in the foreground all day. I wonder if apple broke something when they touched that app switcher handoff code. Or perhaps as you say, apple is removing for some other unknown reason, like battery use.
The timer app is native. Could be that Apple treats their own apps different ;-) Sam Scherer notifications@github.com schrieb am Fr. 19. Jan. 2018 um 23:08:

I just had crashes too. When debugging, I could see in the logs the error:
2018-01-21 18:54:07.575919+0100 nightguard[220:8621] [User Defaults] CFPrefsPlistSource<0x16d90210> (Domain: group.de.my-wan.dhe.nightguard, User: kCFPreferencesCurrentUser, ByHost: No, Container: (null), Contents Need Refresh: Yes): Byte count limit reached
As far as I could see, this comes from the UserDefaults. This is used to cache the values from nightscout. When looking into the docs, there shouldn't be a limit for watchOS. Just for tvOS it should be 1MB. But maybe the docs are not up to date and Apple introduced a limit with watchOS 11.
The bad thing is, that the error vanished here, so I could not dig deeper into it :-/. I think I will disable caching to see if that helps.
I have posted the error here, maybe someone could shed some light on it there ;-)
I've tried, unsuccessfully, to install build 149 on my Series 2. It works on the phone, but it just keeps trying to install on the watch. I then uninstalled it (just from the watch) and tried again, but it kept spinning. I've now restarted the phone and tried to install the watch app again, but it just sits there spinning in the Watch app. Next up: trying to uninstall the app on the phone as well, and then installing again from TestFlight.
Nope, the watch app build 149 still won't install.
Hi Dirk,
I have a series 1 and was able to install build 149 yesterday afternoon. Nightguard did stay on my watchface for several hours yesterday with no issues however this morning it has ‘dropped’ several times over the first couple of hours of the day.

Hi Dirk,
Thanks for all you do with this app! Have noticed since the recent iOS 11 update the app on my Apple Watch Series 1 has not been as stable, consistently notice it defaults back to main apple watchface and sometimes see a lag in the update. Verified settings are to set to always open on last app and both iPhone and apple watch are running the most recent software. Also noticed the complication is no longer available and while it didn’t always update from the native apple watchface it was nice to be able to have a ‘quick link’ to the Nightguard face. I’m located in Canada. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated and thanks again!
