It seems to be the case that the highlighting of the selected message is too subtle.
Here is one example where the first of the two visible messages is highlighted/selected:

When really looking carefully, I see a really small difference but this is far from enough to me in order to realize which message is active.

I only found out when testing the keyboard shortcuts of Mastodon web UI and while navigating with up/down, the only thing that happened was scrolling when I somehow reached the upper or lower most message and the timeline shifted without any visible reason.
How to reproduce
Select a message, e.g., by using the primary mouse button. Then switch to a different message, e.g., by using the up/down arrow keys. You see a reeeeeaaly tiny difference in shade but without a direct comparison, the difference is lost once you don't remember the exact position and start to move the focus again.
