Fix autotools usage #19

Update the build system to use modern macros instead of deprecated or ad-hoc manual code. Use new automake options to quiesce a warning. And fix some other issues.

I think there are lot's of good changes in here. But I don't think that I would like to merge everything as is. Could I ask you to split this up into separate PRs?

Sure! I've split each commit into its own PR, hope this makes it easier to deal with.

[ Although I noticed that several of the fixes here and from previous ones had already been folded into other (sometimes unrelated) commits w/o attribution. :( ]
