I finally managed to clean this up & prepare a pull request like we discussed on rebrickable some time ago. Still not 100% satisfied on the responsiveness/accuracy and feel like it could be improved even further, which I hope to fix some time in the future but that could take a while, unfortunately not a lot of spare time lately.
