How many surface labels? #49

I left the following message on NeuroStars (http://neurostars.org/p/2680/):

"I am preparing to release a new version of the Mindboggle software (http://mindboggle.info) and need to make a decision about output labels and am requesting feedback from the community.

As is described in Mindboggle's labeling FAQ, the volume outputs (labels, volumes, thicknesses) use the 31 cortical labels per hemisphere in the DKT31 protocol + MGH (wmparc.mgz) noncortical labels.

Currently, the surface outputs use 25 cortical labels per hemisphere, which take the 31 cortical labels above and combine the cingulate regions together, the middle frontal regions together, and the inferior frontal regions together (see "Combined / eliminated regions" in the above FAQ for the rationale). These 25 labels are intended to be consistent with the definitions of the 25 sulci and fundi generated by Mindboggle, but are inconsistent with / aggregates of the DKT31 volume labels.

I will continue to generate 25 sulci and 25 fundi per hemisphere, but do you think I should output 31 or 25 surface labels (and their shape measures) per hemisphere? I could generate both, but feel that this may confuse people. What do you think?"

I have decided to make it easier for everybody to understand by sticking to the DKT31 protocol, and to use the DKT25 only when extracting sulci/fundi.
