encode TIFF data into "base 256" RGB values as PNGs
serve PNGs
intercept rendering and shade/map colours on the frontend

Questions

what would the server side look like? pack rendered PNGs into a .mbtiles? read data values straight off GeoTIFF?
how's the client-side performance? any device requirements?
how to hook in and get values on hover/click?
any way to pack multiple layers in?
any benefits to non-PNG encoding?

Potential benefits:

less server-side work
avoid workarounds with lossy colour-map encoding to parse data values back out on hover
maybe better colour-mapping options (log transform, dynamic palettes?)

Closing as unlikely given current priorities - still an interesting candidate for some exploration if possible.
