I am having the same problem with my windows 7 64bit system, except I have
tried downloading/running the necessary .jnlp file from IE, firefox, and even
google chrome, and all of them just bring up the file showing a bunch of xml
garbage but my appinventor page never goes past saying "Opening the block
editor...click to cancel"
It is very frustrating because it seems like none of these browsers know what
to do with that file, when I tell them to open it they just show what the text
basically says, not very helpful!!

I am running vista 32-bit and have the same problem. I have resorted to opening
the file AppInventorForAndroidCodeblocks.jnlp in chrome, firefox, and java.
When I open it with java a command window flashes on the screen and disappears.
When I open the file with firefox a box says "do you want to open or save this
file" and saves a copy if I choose save. If I choose to open, the same box
opens with the same question in another tab. When I open the file with chrome,
a new tab opens with this text across the top.

Hello Everyone! Hope everyone is doing well.
I have a question. I opened my blocks editor this a.m. and 'all' my blocks for
a project have disappeared! I tried the zoom-in-zoom out feature as well as
scrolling left-right, up-down, but to no avail. Is there a recent known bug
with the block editor?
All help appreciated. This just started yesterday. And then when I launched it
today, its still the same. Also, when clicking on the 'my definitions' tap in
the blocks editor, there are no definitions listed under that option.

It is a problem with the firewall. You have to allow connections to java.exe
and javaws.exe.

Original comment by MISTECHS...@gmail.com

Ok, I solved my own problem... I can only tell you what I did, I assume it
will work on other browsers. First, change your browsers download location to
somewhere other than the current location. Second, cancel the supposed opening
of blocks editor on the project page. Try to open blocks editor again. When
the file is done downloading, go to the download location on your PC (the
desktop for me), and run it from there. It would seem to me that each time you
tried to open blocks editor, and downloaded the file, it would make a copy as
they have the same name each time. So after looking in my downloads folder, I
noticed there were no files marked .jnlp. Can't open a file that is not there.
If you use Internet Explorer it would even be more difficult to figure out.
IE downloads to a temp folder by default and its not in a easy to find spot on
the HDD. Hope this helps someone.

I had the same problem, and your solution to change download directories worked
perfectly- although I don't know that you need to actually change the
directory. If you open the blocks editor and download the .jnlp you can just
open it on through navigating to the containing folder on your pc rather than
clicking the downloaded object within the browser...
cheers!

Wow, thanks for figuring that out!! Lost a few hours on that one.
I found a little different solution: Simply deleting the file
(AppInventorForAndroidCodeblocks.jnlp) in my download location BEFORE trying to
open the block editor made it work fine.
Just another step to opening the block editor prevents you from having to
constantly change the download location and prevents having multiple copies of
that .jnlp scattered all over your hard drive in numerous locations.

Chrome 24.0.1312.52 m
AppInventor v1.2
I have basically the same problem. The jnlp-file downloads OK, started it and
stuck at java's "Downloading application". Like someone else commented.
I deactivade AVG and it works like a charm.
So the question is what is blocked by AVG?
I've put both C:\Program Files\AppInventor\ and C:\Program Files\Java\ as
exceptions i resident shield. Does not help.
I've put java.exe, javaws.exe and most of the files in appinventor as exception
for "potentially unwanted programs", but AVG is still blocking.
It's kind of tiresome to inactivate AVG everytime I'm using AppInventor.

After disabling separate components inside AVG, it seems to be related to the
LinkScanner component.
When LinkScanner is disabled and the rest of AVG running as usual, Blocks
Editor open up fine.
Did a quick search for adding exceptions to AVG LinkScanner, but does not seem
to be possible.

I had this issue: I have been using app inventor for school and now just use it
personally as a base android creator. I had not opened the block editor in a
while, but today I decided to review some of the assignments from my class.
When I went to open the block editor, my jnlp file downloaded. I clicked on it
in my chrome browser, and it told me it did not know how to open the file. I am
running win 7 x64 and java 7, again this used to work. I read through the
comments here and the solution that worked for me was to tell the file to open
with Javaws. find it in C:/Program files/Java/jre7/lib and it is in the list
here. redirecting the file to open with this immediately fixed my issue the
next time I tried to open the block editor. Thnx #37. I was thorough because I
hope this helps someone else.

I have tried everything described in this post
Remove/ Uninstall Browser and re-install
Try on different browsers (Firefox and Chrome)
Remove and re-install Java
Disable Firewall
Move download location
Try opening directly from download instead of browser.
Remove and re-install App Inventor Software.
Tried opening with both Java Web Installer and Java
Nothing seems to work
I get the dialogue 'Starting application... Downloading Application' and that's
all.
The dialogue box just sits there. App Inventor Eventually asks me if I wish to
carry on waiting.
I wasted more than a day on just trying to get the block editor to open...
It was working on this machine a little while back, Windows Updates have been
applied and other software added or updated.
Whilst typing this I've now got an 'Application Error' dialogue - Unable to
launch the application.
I've copied the reports from the trace and included them in the attached file.
However I do have another computer for which (so far) I've not had any
problems, all running the same software (OS, Browser, Java and Internet
Security / Firewall)
So the only difference (other than they will have slightly different programs
installed) is the hardware. The computer I'm having a problem with is an Acer
Aspire 8942G and this is accessing the app inventor over a wireless connection
whereas my desktop is accessing it over a wired connection...

Hope this helps someone...!

1 - Open: Applications -> Internet -> Oracle Java Web Start 8
2 - Click on "Settings" under "Network Settings"
3 - Uncheck the box "Allow temporary files on my computer"
4 - Click OK.
5 - Click OK again.
6 - Return to App Inventor and click "Open Block Editor"
7 - A security message will appear, click on "Accept or OK"
8 - The Blocks Editor will open normally.

After I download AppInventor 2.2 and install it, Blocks Editor complains that
I've somehow downloaded Ver. 1.2, instead, and deems it incompatible.
Was there an error posting the latest version of the installer? Does someone
