Select, Cut, Copy & Paste in both Component and Blocks Editors #1591

Being able to Select (including multiple select), Cut, Copy & Paste in both
Component and Blocks Editors would make app-inventor so much nicer to work
with. Dragging selected components to different position in the viewer would
also be a great feature. This is especially true when there are large numbers
of components as it's difficult to see them all in the viewer and often the
structure in components doesn't reflect whats in the viewer.

Besides that this is a great application environment. I have been able to
produce a quite complex application in a very short time given the learning
curve. Mu kudos to the development team....keep up the good work!

Especially since I have such a long list of components in the viewer- whenever
I make a change, it jumps to the top of the list, or at least 2-3 "page up"
scrolls, causing me to then have to rescroll back down to the section I'm
working on, over and over.

Even enabling the scrollable "components" section to lock or snap to the
section being worked on would be helpful in minimizing time wasted on
scrolling, scrolling, scrolling...

Still very grateful to be able to be able to program at all in a GUI, so kudos
on the work so far, but feedback is a good thing...

I absolutely agree here. I chose to try to create an android keyboard for my
first project. Having to manually drag 200 plus buttons, set color, text, size,
etc for each one is turning into a headache that would make one abandon the app
inventor.
Cut and Paste is such a simple function. It already exists in the block editor,
so why is is so low on the development team's list of action items. Ditto for
multi select (lasso) in these designers.
Please give some thought to upping the priority on functionality that everyone
will use on a daily basis rather than putting priority on bells and whistles or
esoteric functions that only a few can put to use.
From the dates on this issue, it has been put on low priority for over a year.

I agree. Honestly, other platforms are catching up and will soon out pace my
beloved AI. Schools will use what is easies to make cool apps. I feel like I am
standing on the sidewalk watching someone smash a perfectly good sports car.
It's heart wrenching!

OOps...My apologies for not adding that I think this environment is a wonderful
new approach. I used to love programming. But the dotnet platform turned
programming into a tedious chore where we spend days looking for one functin
that does the job we want. Changes are we will never use that funciton again!
Boo Hiss!! We are now librarians rather than creative programmers. I look
forward to seeing this environment mature into an IDE that we LOVE to work in!!
   Keep up the great work.

not only able copy components and blocks to the same screen, but also to be
able copy-paste cross different screens. that would be great.

Hi,
I have the same problem. I'd like be able to copy-paste cross different screens.

My biggest desire in this area is to be able to copy/paste in the designer. I
just manually edited 4 properties in 72 buttons, all the same. It took more
than an hour. If I could have copied one button and pasted it 71 times, I would
have been done in minutes. Please, this must be a top priority.

Expanding (or contracting :-) my previous comment - If I could just multiple
select many buttons, then change properties for all selected buttons at once,
then I think the process would have been even faster. If I could multiple
select, choose Rename and then supply a name with a "#" in the text that would
be a sequence number I could easily reproduce a whole evening's work in just a
minute or two.

I just returned to writing android apps after several years hiatus. I think 3
years has been long enough to not deal with this complaint. I liked AI from my
brief experience a few years ago. If I am going to learn a tool to write apps
from scratch any tool will do. The first thing I do when I get done this
message is look for that other tool. The app I am working on would require me
to change font to '24' 18 times, change alignment 18 times, change width to
'50' 18 times, and change height to '50' 18 times. I still thank the MIT team
for all their work.
