App takes 8-10 secs to load and display.

I recently built an Android app using MIT AppInventor. But it takes about 8-10 
secs for the app to load and display after clicking on its launch icon on my 
Toshiba Thrive Android Tablet. During this duration it displays a Black blank 
screen.
But once it fully loads it works fast and perfectly smooth.
It takes the same amount of time on the Emulator as well. 
Is this 'Load Time' something that can be controlled from the AI side ?
How can one avoid this or try displaying a message ..something like 
'Loading..Please wait' while the Screen1 loads
I tried incorporating a Splash Screen using the Timer but it didn't resolve the 
problem.
The Splash Screen displays after the 8-10 secs gap..

btw..My apk file size is just 2.2 MB and 5.5 MB when installed on my Toshiba 
Thrive Android Tablet.
