Error when importing standalone home.nix file into configuration.nix #5083

Are you following the right branch?

Is there an existing issue for this?

Issue description

I am trying to import my previous standalone home.nix into my NixOS configuration.nix like so:

home-manager.users.user.imports = [ /home/user/.dotfiles/nix/home.nix ];

Rebuilds then fail with: "error: The option `home' does not exist."

The first few lines of my home.nix are:

{ config, pkgs, ... }:

{
  # Home Manager needs a bit of information about you and the paths it should
  # manage.
  home.username = "USERNAME";
  home.homeDirectory = "/home/USERNAME";

...
}

Did you add

imports = [ <home-manager/nixos> ];

See the NixOS Module installation instructions.

Yes. It works fine if I manually paste in the contents of home.nix into configuration.nix, but adding the file as an import fails. I want to use the same home.nix on non-NixOS machine hence trying to get it to work this way.
