For example, /nix/var/nix/current-system vs /nix/var/nix/gcroots/current-system

Idea: some sort of PATH for all known locations.

Reevaluating this issue, I think /nix/var/nix/gcroots/current-system is here to stay. Closing to free up concentration for more important issues.
