Things I've found:

Need to use UTF-8 for console output so colored text doesn't blow up character map. Easiest solution I found is to set the environment variable PYTHONUTF8=1.
The readline python module is not included in Windows Python install since the readline function doesn't exist in Windows. If you install the pyreadline package, then any calls to readline are automatically wrapped to mirror readline behavior, and it just works w/o any changes to the code.

Okay though regarding all the windows issues I think it is a distraction right now... I'm glad you found them and I do really want it to work on windows myself but I think this will have to wait - more important it getting it working in a stable way for cfht/lam/mtl on Linux. Although most these changes are minor I don't want to be potentially breaking more things right now! So this refers to at least Issues #633, #634, #635, #637 and #640.
