Diggle et al.’s “Analysis of Longitudinal Data”

There is no single prescription for making effective graphical displays of longitudinal data, but the following are a few simple guidelines:

  1. show as much of the relevant raw data as possible rather than only data summaries;
  2. highlight aggregate patterns of potential scientific interest;
  3. identify both cross-sectional and longitudinal patterns as distinguished in Section 1.1;
  4. make easy the identification of unusual individuals or unusual observations.
