[Linux Client] Crash after Game Ready #341

Closed d10sfan closed 11 years ago

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

After trying to start a server using the Create a Server command, the game will work for about 30 seconds, and then unspawn the character, as in the camera just resets and the the input keys don't work. Then, a few seconds later, the game crashes.

Here's the last lines of the console log:

Just tried it again, still happening

essbuh commented 11 years ago

Is this fixed as of the latest steam update (8/23)?

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

No, still happens in the latest update.

essbuh commented 11 years ago

What map is this on?

Happens on each map

essbuh commented 11 years ago

It does not happen for me on my Linux machine. What graphics driver are you using?

Also, if you have any core dumps that you would be able to upload, it would certainly be helpful, as just knowing that it segfaults does not provide any meaningful information.

I'm on Nvidia 319.32, works fine on lots of other games, including source games. I'm running 64-bit Linux

Uploaded a dump here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/3btz8l That what you're looking for?

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

Anything new on this?

essbuh commented 11 years ago

Looks like it's crashing when trying to play the objective sound. Can you try validating your game cache? Also, if you load up a survival map and run "playgamesound Objective.Begin" in console, does it play successfully?

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

I validated my game cache and did the create server again with a nms (guessing that's the survival maps)

Tried doing that in the console and the game immediately crashed

Survival maps seem to work (without trying to call playgamesound)

essbuh commented 11 years ago

Maybe it's something with it trying to play an MP3 -- does it crash if you "playgamesound NMRPlayer.InfectionTheme" ? Or, can you go to the nmrih installation directory (probably ~/.steam/steam/SteamApps/common/nmrih/nmrih) and play sound/ui/objective_begin.mp3 manually?

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

Tried that command and it crashed.

I went to the directory and loaded the mp3 with gnome mplayer and it played fine in that player

essbuh commented 11 years ago

What distribution are you running?

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

I'm on Linux Mint 14 (based on Ubuntu Quantal)

essbuh commented 11 years ago

Hm. Could you try running steam with the STEAM_RUNTIME environment variable set to 0 or 1, e.g:

STEAM_RUNTIME=1 steam STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam

And see if either one makes a difference?

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

setting runtime to 1 didn't make a difference. Setting it to 0 crashes Steam for me

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

Could there be a library that I need to install?

essbuh commented 11 years ago

Not sure. I don't know what libraries steam depends on. My first guess for mp3 would be libmp3lame but I'd be surprised if that isn't already installed. Is there anything in the console on startup about sound system errors? Maybe if you run steam through terminal and launch nmrih that way, checking the terminal window for anything? d10sfan commented 11 years ago

Below is what running steam through Terminal and launching nmrih gives me: http://pastebin.com/bEMNRWe1

One thing of interest is there's a .pak file it apparenly can't find

Console seems to have basically the same stuff in it

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

Sorry to bump this again, but anything new?

Smil3yRiley commented 11 years ago

No, but can you add http://steamcommunity.com/id/sglau/ to your Steam Friends

Be sure to leave a comment on my page to let me know it's you

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

Latest update causes both modes to crash now, right after clicking Join Game, instead of crashing once the audio was playing, like before patch. Here's what's showing up in Terminal upon starting the game: http://pastebin.com/5DWtXuwW

Successfully installed ubuntu-restricted-extras, which may help with the audio crash.

Smil3yRiley commented 11 years ago

@d10sfan Looks like we uploaded a broken build on Steam (windows crashes as well), odd though since the Dev build works just fine

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

AH ok, will a new build be uploaded soon?

essbuh commented 11 years ago

Should already be fixed.

d10sfan commented 11 years ago

Ok, that fixed the new crashing for me. Game is still crashing in objective mode for me though (same way as before)

essbuh commented 11 years ago

Not sure what needs to be done about that -- something with your MP3 libraries are messed up. I may have to try installing Mint 14 somewhere to play around with it.

Ok that'd be great thanks, I did try installing the ubuntu audio extras, but that seemed to have no effect. For example, I can launch cabin, it will run for a while until it resets you and shows your hands, then few seconds later of that, it crashes.

Also, still seeing some materials missing, for example getting checkerboard monitors on the mall map (nms_?) and the ceiling is purple on the prison one

essbuh commented 11 years ago

I'd post a separate ticket about any missing materials (the console should spew out any errors of the exact ones that are missing), since that's probably just due to incorrect file / folder case.

As for the crashing, yeah, that few seconds after map reset is when it's trying to play the objective "bong" sound, which is probably the first MP3 it tries to play in any round. I'm starting to wonder if maybe TF2 et al. just use WAVs for everything..

Ok, latest update fixed it. Thanks!! What was the problem out of curiosity?

Also, I believe there's already a ticket for the Linux missing materials issue

essbuh commented 11 years ago

No idea. We just converted all MP3 to WAV :)
