Lightning: Singularity - alternative for docker in high performance computing #14

Open pdworzynski opened 5 years ago

pdworzynski commented 5 years ago

Docker provides a powerful way to distribute software alongside all of its dependencies. So far, however, Docker adoption in high-performance computing environments was low primarily due to its elevated security requirements. Singularity was created to tackle precisely this issue and could pave the way for adoption of docker-based tools on systems such as Comptuerome.

This talk will be a very brief introduction to Singularity and related to docker tutorial and computational best practices discussion.

Hey, I was actually planning to include a little demo on Singularity and Docker in the workshop. Maybe we can get together on this and in addition to your lightning talk you give a short demo? I was thinking something like 15 minutes at the end just to show what is possible.

Hey, to be honest, I have almost no experience with Singularity - my idea about this talk was mostly just put it out there, mention basic capabilities and say a few words on how it could be used as viable Docker alternative in HPC. If you were planning to go over it in the workshop, I think the lightning talk I proposed would be redundant. I am very much looking forward the workshop to hear about it more!

I think we should just move this to the workshop then.
