Calibre Not Finding Books on Kindle #290

Question / bug report

Since nothing works to download my Kindle books to Calibre (after their DRM lockdown earlier this year) so I can make them epubs and add them to my Kobo to read, I broke down and bought a Kindle to get them into my Calibre library.

The serial number has been added to Calibre. Calibre recognizes that the device is plugged in, or maybe it doesn't... it stills shows the device manager icon in the menu bar even when it's not plugged it. Never used to do that. Perhaps it's because there's a Kindle serial number there? Anyway, it does not find any books on the device.

I've also tried going in through the Kindle on my computer and adding the files to Calibre manually, but the plugin doesn't decrypt them.

If it matters, it's a Kindle

What is it I'm missing here? This seems to be so much more complicated than the plug-and-play ease of my Kobo...

Which version of Calibre are you running?

6.13

Which version of the DeDRM plugin are you running?

10.0.3

If applicable, which version of the Kindle software are you running?

5.15.1

You need to download the books from your Content & Devices page at Amazon.

Tamarissa commented 1 year ago

That's not an option, they are unavailable for download online.

The books downloaded directly to a Kindle with that firmware are most likely in kfx format. Is that what you're seeing? If so, those cannot be decrypted.

So are they Kindle Unlimited books, or ones that you purchased?

It appears I'm not being understood here at all, so I'm going to try this again.

Why can't I see books that have been downloaded to my Kindle when it's connected to Calibre? Regardless of whether I can decrypt them or not at this point, I should be able to see them and add/correct/remove meta data on them the same way I can with books on my Kobo. Correct? Otherwise the device is useless... there's no way to organize it (bulk organize... I'm sure not going to go into every book individually and figure out how to make the device's library make sense).

Until I get this answer resolved, nothing else is relevant. However, once I am able to view my books on my kindle in Calibre, then yes, I would like to decrypt the new ones and add them to my library. Is this something that is also impossible to do since their change at the beginning of the year? When I view the downloaded files in Finder in the Kindle folder, they are .kfx files, same as they were in the past, although obviously internally different as nothing works to open them anymore.

The books downloaded directly to a Kindle with that firmware are most likely in kfx format. Is that what you're seeing? If so, those cannot be decrypted.

Is there a firmware version where they can be?

I'm not sure what Kindle Unlimited has to do with anything; those are not my books, they are Amazon's books. I am only talking about my books. Not all purchased books are available for download, and that option will also likely be the next thing Amazon takes away in this battle where they still actually own everything we "purchase", and we have to fight for control over our own purchases.

For ereader/ebook questions unrelated to DRM removal, I suggest looking or asking at MobileRead. I don't know why you wouldn't be able to see books downloaded to your Kindle in calibre.

If they are purchased books and you do not have the option for "download & transfer via USB" from your "Content & Devices" page at Amazon, then they are probably books that are only available in the KFX format which always has DRM. This is applicable to a relatively small number of books -- mainly textbooks and books in Arabic or Chinese. If they were published before 3 Jan 2023 and you can download them with Kindle for PC 1.26 or earlier, then that older version of KFX DRM can be decrypted. If you're willing to share the ASIN for one of your books, I can see if I can tell.

The reason salym329 asked if they were Kindle Unlimited books is because another of the recent changes was to remove the download & transfer option for all borrowed books regardless of publication date.

Did you buy a Kindle device to read K.U.'s borrowed ebooks? If so, did you borrow it and did the ebooks show up in your device's library? For caliber to find these borrowed ebooks on your device you will need to download the ebooks to your device. It is not enough to borrow it, you need to download it to the device. When this occurs, a folder with the name of the ebook is generated with several files inside and a single file with the extension KFX-ZIP is also generated outside the folder. I'm Brazilian and I don't speak English so I'm sorry for any mistakes because I use Google Translate to communicate.
