How to use with Kobo Books? #346

Question / bug report

I've read the FAQ carefully and searched on line. But I am at a loss as to how to use with Kobo Books.

How do I import Kobo books in the first place. I have the Kobo Desktop Edition. But I can't see how to transfer books from Desktop edition into Calibre and then how to remove the DRM.

I would appreciate if someone could give me some pointers.

Thanks!

Which version of Calibre are you running?

6.19.1

Which version of the DeDRM plugin are you running?

10.0.3

If applicable, which version of the Kindle software are you running?

Use the Obok plugin for books from Kobo desktop or a Kobo ereader.

Thanks! The plugin was hidden in the tool bar behind 3 dots at the end of the Calibre tool bar. I've imported my books, but some of them get imported as gobbledygook. (see attached screen shot).

Is there a way to correct this? ![Uploading Screen Shot 2023-06-07 at 15.06.37.png…]()

I've seen Obok mistakenly identify an ebook as DRM-free and import it without removing the DRM. Deleting the book and restarting calibre and Kobo Desktop before trying again has worked for me. The books with DRM should show a red closed lock in Obok's list.

Thanks, I tried deleting the book and then restarting everything. But when I click to import, everything shows with a green open lock. Is there any way to force it to identify it as DRM book?

Also, is there an issue with using books from the Kobo Plus subscription service? Thanks!

I don't know to both questions. For purchased books, you can download Adobe DRM books via the website and Adobe Digital Editions. Then use the DeDRM plugin. But I don't imagine that Kobo Plus books are available that way.

@catqueenpurr - it works the best for me to open both the Kobo desktop and calibre apps, download the Kobo books and then close the Kobo app. The books should then show up with the red lock in Obok. I've only had issues with the Kobo app open.

Thank you soo much, I was having issues with two of my books, but when I closed the KOBO app, the two problem books became locked again and I was then able to access it properly.

I'm having this exact problem using kobo desktop (i don´t have a kobo reader at the moment) and calibre and nothing suggested here worked for me. Is it supposed to work with Kobo Plus books or just with books i've bought? Thank you

(I'm using the latest versions of calibre and dedrm/obok on a windows 10.)

As far as I know there is nothing in Obok which intentionally prevents it from working with Kobo Plus books. However, there may be something different about their encryption which Obok doesn't handle. Purchased books should work fine. And those can also be downloaded via Adobe Digital Editions and decrypted with DeDRM.

Yes , it works fine with purchased books, the problems i've encountered were with Kobo Plus books. It works for other people but for some reason i can't make it work i for me. Thx

I'm having a similar issue. My books show up in the obok UI as unlocked, and when I pull them into calibre, it even opens them in the ebook reader, but some of them only get a certain number of pages before the rest is blank. One offender is a compilation of books called "Battle Mars - The Complete Series - Books 1-4". It gives me through the first couple pages of Chapter 6 of book 1, then jumps directly to the end of the ToC, but there are no more pages.

That book is listed as DRM-free. Try a different ebook reader.
