Additional Science Tests in NACC-CMAQv5.3.1 for NAQFC. #6

Compared to current NAQFC, NACC-CMAQ has the luxury of testing numerous science enhancements to gauge their impact on new NAQFC. These are science tests of the current CMAQv5.3.1 release code capabilities, and do not necessarily need code changes for NAQFC. They are currently as follows:

  1. Current NAQFC has 35 layers that known to be too coarse in the PBL and near tropopause, so with increased speed of NACC-CMAQ we are enhancing to more vertical layers in PBL and near tropopause (e.g., 57 layers). Needs testing and evaluation. Will update here with results from initial testing.

  2. CMAQv5.3.1 has new science update for dry deposition, the Surface Tiled Aerosol and Gas Exchange (STAGE) model that calculates tiled land use fraction dependent dry deposition velocities for gases and aerosols. Needs testing and evaluation. Will update here with results from initial testing.

  3. Current NAQFC does not handle BIDI-NH3, and has been major science limitation in the past. Now, we will test 2011 BIDI-NH3 inputs in NACC-CMAQ and gauge results for possible NAQFC enhancement. Tests and analysis are needed. This will be tested with both M3Dry and STAGE version of BIDI-NH3. Results will follow.

  4. BEISv3.6.1 is updated in CMAQv5.3.1, so here we want to test BELD4 results in new NACC-CMAQ system. Tests and analysis are needed on the impacts to ozone and PM formation. Tests, analysis and results will follow.

  5. There are advancements on lightning NOx emissions in CMAQv5.3.1, which have strong impacts on N deposition and concentrations in the troposphere. Here we test impacts of lightning NOx parameterize for AQF forecasting capability and NAQFC. Tests, analysis and results will follow.

I'll keep working on #1 to get this going.
