Nodebots are on the rise. Controlling hardware with JavaScript has never being easier.
Frameworks like Johnny-Five are doing for electronics what JQuery did for the DOM back in the day. This opens the door to web developers into a field that used to be the realm of hardcore engineers…and what web developer can bring to the party is quirkiness, artistry and playfulness.
I have always being fascinated by practical special effects in movies.
Currently controlling the movement and timing of multiple servos in animatronics is typically managed by an in house-develop control systems or by expensive (Windows based) proprietary software.
I want to share in this talk my experience developing a Web based control system powered by Node.js, Express.js, Socket.io and Johnny-Five. The ui allows an operator to create and organise animation sequences that control servos in real time.
This tool/editor is mostly an excuse to evangelise about the democratisation of hardware,
and to show web developers that there is a ton of cool stuff they can build today using their
existing skill set.
