I would love to see a mission statement of some kind, even if it's just two or three sentences for the README and that's it. I think we should be able to articulate something, even if it's just a draft to be expanded and clarified later.
The contributing guide seems like it may get hung up for a while. Or maybe not? But either way, a short first draft of this doc doesn't necessarily need to wait for that. The discussion around the contributing guide does make it seem like there may not be a clear understanding of what the group is trying to achieve, so it may be a good idea to make that as clear as we can at this time.
Things that I would love to see articulated, even if it's only implicitly, and even if it's only one of the below:
What is diversity in this context? It will be hard to avoid a laundry list here, so maybe just go for it with a note that it is necessarily incomplete. With apologies in advance if I am including any language that is regarded as insensitive: We seek to be inclusive regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, age, native language, geography, nationality, economic status...
How to handle the sticky diversity issues? For example, seeking to be diverse and welcoming to some significant religious and political viewpoints may be at odds with other diversity goals. How will this working group seek to resolve that inherent tension?
A list of the members of the WG. The proposed contributing guide mentions contacting a member of the working group in a few places. If people are going to be told to do that, it only makes sense to conspicuously list who those people are that they should contact.
