Some changes to the workshops #5

Since starting NodeSchool Haarlem last November, we’ve been looking at how to best organize our workshops. We wanted to organize them in much the same way a lot of open source projects are organized: open, interesting, challenging, social and self-organizing.

From all the enthusiasm you have shown us, we think we’re doing a decent job so far. However, with the current open format of the workshops we feel it's sometimes hard for people to get started. So we decided to make some changes to the format.

First of all, starting with the next NodeSchool workshop, doors will open at 18.30h instead of 18.00h. This is not set in stone, but for now, we’re going to run with this.

Secondly, we want to plan for 30 minutes of preparation time at the start of the workshops. This allows for everyone to get settled and ready and us to assist anyone new to NodeSchool set up whenever necessary. We felt this sometimes was a bottleneck for people and we want to make sure you feel fully ready to start the workshop.

After prep time, we want to do a short 10 minute introduction. We’ll use this time to help you pick a workshopper and to (optionally) pair up you up with someone that is going to work on the same tutorial. After that, the coding session will start and as usual our mentors will be available for help, might you run into a little snag.

From the get-go, our main goal has been learning people to program with JavaScript and Node.js while having fun doing so. That's why we want to make sure you find a workshopper that’s appropriate yet challenging for your current skill level. And by pairing you up with someone else, we hope you can learn from each other and share the fun.

“What about the drinks and pizzas?”, you might start to ask by now. Well, don't worry about that! We love pizzas and we get thirsty as well, so we’ll make sure we have that taken care off.

There are a lot more ideas that we’re considering, like getting some swag, creating achievement badges, arranging talks and even doing a full-day hackathon. None of these are fully worked out though and we're not making any promises, but we will keep you posted!

And one more thing: if you want to stay in touch outside of the workshops, you can! You can watch this repository or join our Gitter channel. Oh, we’re on Twitter too: @nodeschoolhar!

We hope to see you soon,

The NodeSchool Haarlem team
