Upcoming events #45

sethvincent commented 7 years ago

It's been a while since there's been a seattle nodeschool event.

Let's have another!

Input and help on this is welcome!

CADBOT commented 7 years ago

I'm interested in providing ongoing space and/or instructional capacity for node school!

satanas commented 7 years ago

Hey @sethvincent, as I mentioned in #44, I work at Groupon and here, @Xabadu and I are very interested in helping organize a few events. We could use Groupon's office as the venue (I'd say we have capacity for ~50 people) and we have some mentors too. I know that @JustinBeckwith was also interested a few months ago, so if he's still interested we could work for making one at the end of the year (maybe first weeks of December). I know December could be hard since a lot of folks travel and go on vacations but we could use it as a warm up for 2018.

Let us know what do you think.

JustinBeckwith commented 7 years ago

I'm totally still interested! Google can offer event space in Fremont or in Kirkland, and we have a few folks who would be able to help out on event days as well.

daveskull81 commented 7 years ago

I'm still interested in helping out how I can. I've enjoyed going to the nodeschool events. I'd be happy to help in some way.

satanas commented 7 years ago

Hey @JustinBeckwith @daveskull81, great to hear that! I think we have a quorum 😃

@sethvincent what would be the next steps to start with the organization?

sethvincent commented 7 years ago

Exciting! Let's make it happen.

Here's what I'm thinking:

After that we come up with a regular schedule for 2018.

Thoughts on that?

@JustinBeckwith does the Google Fremont location have availability for early November?

@satanas would the first or second week of December work for an event at Groupon?

I think we've had the best luck with Saturday afternoons so far, but weeknight events work alright as well.

@daveskull81 🎉

CADBOT commented 7 years ago

@sethvincent Galvanize is interested in hosting and providing instructional help as well! Any time/day works for us

satanas commented 7 years ago

@sethvincent the first or second week of December sounds perfect for Groupon. Sadly, I'll be out of the country from Oct 12th to November 17th, thus I won't be able to help during that time frame 😢 but count on me for the rest of the year 👍

satanas commented 7 years ago

I'm very excited about these events. Is there anything we can do on our end to start moving the gears? I'd assume that we need a lot of coordination, so time is gold :)

satanas commented 7 years ago

Ping!

JustinBeckwith commented 7 years ago

@sethvincent Yup, we can host pretty much any time in November. We've got a perfect space for this kind of stuff. Lets just lock in on a date. As a random suggestion - how does November 4th sound?

sethvincent commented 7 years ago

@JustinBeckwith Awesome, I think November 4th is great.

@satanas How about December 2 at Groupon?

As long as we've got confirmation for use of the space we're good, and can work through this checklist:

If I'm missing anything from that list or if anyone wants to claim any of these items, leave a comment.

CADBOT commented 7 years ago

@sethvincent 🙋‍♂️ Would you be interested in working with us in October or January. Galvanize is very interested a well! :)

satanas commented 7 years ago

Hey @sethvincent, December 2nd sounds perfect for Groupon too. I'll ask to see if we can cover the snacks & drinks (I think it shouldn't be a problem).

Is there a repo where I could check https://nodeschool.io/seattle? Or what would be the way to make improvements?

Xabadu commented 7 years ago

Hey everyone! I'm Fernando, one of the organizers from NodeSchool San Francisco. I'm helping @satanas organize the event for Groupon at December, so more than happy to contribute with whatever I can (I'll be flying to Seattle for the event as well, so count me in as a mentor 🤘 ).

Just wanted to give a suggestion about the website. We ran into a similar issue a while back where we wanted to do a refactor of the entire site, but the project didn't quite work out for different issues (mostly time related), so the approach we decided to take was to fork the Oakland's chapter website (they are our bff's), which has a pretty neat design and useful tooling, so I wanted to make that available for you guys in case you're interested.

satanas commented 7 years ago

Guys, I just wanted to let you know that I created an issue (https://github.com/nodeschool/seattle/issues/46) to work on the improvements for the website and I started working on that. I cloned the SF website and have it working locally, just need to finish some minor adjustments and I'll send the PR.

Regarding the snacks & drinks, I'm working to get the budget to buy the following:

I think it's a fairly inclusive menu, however, if you think we need to add any other type of food, just let me know. Groupon has plenty snacks and beers, so we can count on that too.

That's my update.

satanas commented 7 years ago

Oh, and here is the wiki from the SF chapter https://github.com/nodeschool/sanfrancisco/wiki. They have a bunch of interesting information (and checklists) that we can ~copy~ implement for our event 😉

satanas commented 7 years ago

Here is the PR with the improvements for the new site https://github.com/nodeschool/seattle/pull/47.

satanas commented 7 years ago

Hey @sethvincent, it's been 20 days since your last response. Are we still up for doing this on Nov 4th and Dec 2nd?

If you're super busy you could give me and @JustinBeckwith permissions to merge and move forward with the organization because I'm moving all the pieces here at Groupon and people are super excited, it would be a bummer if I have to come back to these folks and let them know that NodeSchool is not happening this year. Also, @CADBOT is proposing to host the event on January, which would be cool to kickoff 2018 and keep the cadence. That should help us gain more traction and attract more folks to the party.

Thoughts?

sethvincent commented 7 years ago

@satanas @JustinBeckwith invited you as collaborators! Feel free to go ahead on this without me.

satanas commented 7 years ago

@sethvincent roger that! Thanks for the trust. Will you help us to promote the event? 😜 Because we don't have access to the meetup.com page, twitter, etc and I'd assume that we need to make some announcements.

@Xabadu, I know you have experience organizing NodeSchools before so, would you mind to meet with me, @JustinBeckwith, and @CADBOT (if you guys are still interested, of course) via hangouts, skype or whatever to go over the checklist Seth posted previously and discuss it (as well as any further item necessary to start rolling)?

Xabadu commented 7 years ago

Absolutely, count me in for whatever you guys need!

sethvincent commented 7 years ago

:+1: @satanas @JustinBeckwith join the meetup (https://www.meetup.com/Seattle-NodeSchool) and I'll add you as admin.

CADBOT commented 7 years ago

@satanas @JustinBeckwith I went rogue and ran an unofficial node school the other month: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/learn-to-code-seattle-workshop-exploring-nodejs-tickets-36561922695# I'd love to collaborate with you all going forward though, to keep this going regularly. @sethvincent, any chance of adding me as well?

satanas commented 7 years ago

Hey @CADBOT, that'd be awesome!

@sethvincent I just joined the meetup. Is it possible to add @CADBOT to the meetup, the repo, etc?

sethvincent commented 7 years ago

@satanas I made you a co-organizer on the meetup so you'll have full access there.

@CADBOT I sent a collaborator invite to you for this repo.

satanas commented 7 years ago

@sethvincent awesome! Thank you

CADBOT commented 7 years ago

@sethvincent Thanks! @satanas Want to sync up sometime this week? My schedule is fairly flexible to do a hang out/Skype.

satanas commented 7 years ago

Sure! What about tomorrow 5pm? @CADBOT @Xabadu

Xabadu commented 7 years ago

Sounds good 👍

satanas commented 7 years ago

@Xabadu @CADBOT Folks, I need to go offline a couple of hours today and won't be available for our meeting at 5pm. Do you want to do it later tonight (after 8pm) or do you prefer to postpone it until tomorrow 4.30~5pm?

Xabadu commented 7 years ago

@satanas I have a meetup tonight, so I'm not sure I'd be able to make it, but tomorrow works.

satanas commented 7 years ago

Roger that. Let's wait for @CADBOT and @JustinBeckwith :)

CADBOT commented 7 years ago

My schedule filled up :(. How about Monday or Tuesday at 4:30 @satanas @Xabadu ?

Xabadu commented 7 years ago

Both days work for me. So whatever works for @satanas.

satanas commented 7 years ago

Monday sounds perfect. @CADBOT would you mind to send a Google Calendar invitation for Monday 04.30pm? (@Xabadu and I have our emails in the github profile) 😛

JustinBeckwith commented 7 years ago

Hey folks, I joined up! I also have space at the Google Fremont office reserved, and a few Googlers who can attend on Nov 4th.

Is that too soon?

JustinBeckwith commented 7 years ago

Also forgot to mention - I can cover food.

JustinBeckwith commented 7 years ago

Also @satanas Tuesdays work better for me, but I can make both ;)

satanas commented 6 years ago

Hey @JustinBeckwith! Glad to have you back :)

I think that Nov 4th is kind of close but may be possible. @Xabadu, since you have more experience organizing NodeSchools, would you say it is possible to prepare one in less than a month? We have the venue, the food, and some mentors. @JustinBeckwith @Xabadu, consider that I'll be out of the country from Oct 12th to Nov 17th, so I'll be able to help with promotion and any remote task but sadly, I won't be physically there for the day of the event.

@JustinBeckwith regarding the meeting, let's go on Monday because I'm kind of complicated on Tuesday (preparing everything to travel). I'm sending the calendar invite now :)

@CADBOT, please send me your email to include you in the invite.

JustinBeckwith commented 6 years ago

Now that we're back on track with a few planned events, I'm closing this issue out. Lets start a new one if we want to propose the next event!
