Right now, we require that at startup, all devices are up; also it is not clear what happens on dis-connect and reconnect. This needs to be robust

on startup, remember the interfaces to look at, but don't necessarily crash if they don't connect.
independently probe these interfaces when things are idle and check name; possibly re-wire channels if connections swap
Even better if we can get to know immediately when the state of the channel changes (maybe select on it works)

Fixed for a while now. Possible to disconnect, swap etc. Pretty robust now.
