additional wellness setting: hide number of unseen toots #1474

When navigating down the stream, Pinafore currently displays a counter for new posts that have come in since the last refresh:

new posts count

I'd like to propose an additional wellness setting that replaces this counter with a generic reload button (or just "Show more", omitting the number).

This seems reasonable to me. I can imagine that it's a kind of FOMO anxiety to see that number. Having an option to change it to just "Show more" could work.

I was about to file another issue related to the number of unseen tools but it somehow is related with this one:

Looks like almost two different functions: "You have 64 new toots. Do you want to read them all or you don't care?" Newsgroup readers used to go great lengths to help users solve this problem...

Hmm, this issue sounds related to the "sync my timeline across multiple clients" issue, which is now supported in Mastodon 3.0. Pinafore doesn't implement it yet though.

I can see an argument for scrolling to the top of the 64 toots as well as the bottom. Maybe there should be a separate setting for this.

Personally speaking, it really depends on the mood and the time one wishes to spend on the fediverse. It would be the best to avoid the preference, maybe we can think of something around the "Show" button.

Having think of it, I don't think the number on the button really matters that much and could disappear? Maybe after clicking it there just could be a possibility to scroll down to the last unread one? Thinking out loud.

I have started hoarding some toots in Pinafore and I must admit I like the counter even less. Even worse is when it starts to count up. Probably just two buttons without numbers - one scrolling to the button ("More toots"?) and another one ("Thanks") without? Not a very great idea either....
