I logged the issues separately for history and better tracking. This pull request fixes all of them. The appveyor CI is broken due to the CI spec itself and not to the changes. Cant really check travis as they are asking for credit. Probably need to setup GitHub actions for Linux builds.

All changes integrated as part of the latest refactoring for release 8.7.0.
