apply new style syntax #45

The current syntax was deprecated in tmux 1.9. But the tmux upgrade from 2.8 to 2.9 will no longer accept the 'old' syntax.

Hi @boydkelly :wave:, thanks for your contribution :+1: Looks like this is a duplicate of #34 and #42. The changes still require more in-depth testing and documentation to ensure it'll affect users with old versions as low as possible.
