So No Starch Press got back to me and have accepted us into their user group program. Here are the details:
I've e-mailed them back and they will be sending me The Principle's of Object-Oriented JavaScript by Nicholas Zaka as our first review book. Good news, 'eh!?
Sounds good, are you having them shipped to your house?
I setup O'Reilly shipping address with xTuple. Dunno if we should just ship all of this to @lynnaloo or something to main some order :p
no starch is dope. nicely done

I had the initial one sent to my house, but we can change that up for future requests.
how many sponsors are needed? or what is needed? i think i know a close enough publisher
No limit to sponsors from my point of view... our plan is to raffle off the "swag" they give us at the meetups so that means more learning materials for the members. @bmf @stanzheng - I'm ok with you guys having the books sent in your names as long as you bring them to the meetings :)
FYI, When I reached out to pragmatic for the 757Studio it was the same. But they did send Andy Hunt, which was cool. Pragmatic Studio was similar but they sponsored the event with a fee studio course.
@bmf - I'll add a public general information repo later tonight and we can put all of the book discount information into a wiki that you and @stanzheng have come across.
@lynnaloo Sounds like a plan! I'm also going to reach out to Treehouse and Code School to see if they offer any trial programs for user groups. I'll add them to my list as I get the e-mails out.
ah, 757Studio was schweeet! so long ago. was pretty sure i would be elsewheres by now, then. still, it was my first experience in dev world aside from cubicles on granby. thanks ken.
Speaking of blasts from the past, I was just remembering that the old Java group had a ton of book sponsors: https://sites.google.com/site/sevajug/. Probably don't need to email Sun Microsystems, though ;)
Any coffee shops we want to hit up? Ask them if they'd like to put the Java in JavaScript? We don't do CoffeeScript tho.
@metaskills begs to differ.
That's why JavaScript is cool, the Java prefix is actually coffee and not the other programming language :) What are you thinking about asking the coffee shops for?
Lol... I was trying to be funny. :) But in all seriousness, we could ask for discounts for members. I know some of us like to work from a coffeeshop from time to time.
We don't do CoffeeScript tho
Say whaaa? I'm cruisin' on the CoffeeScript information highway!
+1
the response turn around has me suspicious that Ken has that hot keyed
and undoubtedly, that macro was written in CoffeeScript.
Hey Everyone,
I was speaking to a friend on Twitter and they brought up an issue I wasn't aware of, but I think it's a pretty good one. With regards to these sponsors, I've been working in a vacuum, and just asking for what I felt was best for the group. When it comes to book publishers, I think that's ok, since we are asking them for materials like books and a logo.
But here's the twist: Treehouse wrote me back and they seem receptive to the idea of Sponsoring our group. Now they're asking what we're looking for, and I want to make sure we do our best in negotiating for items that are useful for our group.
So with that being said, here are the things I want for the group. Please let me know if you agree or have different ideas:
Let me know what you think. I plan on responding by noon 2/28.
~Brandon
P.S. Thanks @jalbertbowden, this was a great idea! Please keep 'em coming!
That sounds great to me, @bmf! If there is something specific I'm looking for, I'll mention it, but I am glad to get any kind of member benefits right now. I also like the idea like the coffee shop where we can get swag or discounts that aren't directly related to development. Even logo-swag from some local companies could be nice to give away.
This is another online training company that has some JavaScript courses if we're interested? http://www.pluralsight.com/training/Community/Sponsorships
Now that I'm not laying on a couch dying... I've gone ahead and reached out to to Treehouse. I'll let you all know what they have to say about our list of dema.... requests.... :)
@lynnaloo WRT Pluralsight, have you used them before? Looks like they have a quite a bit to offer user groups. I like their model as well. 25 monthly memberships? That sounds pretty cool. If you haven't reached out to them, let me know and I'll add them to my list.
@lynnaloo Also reach out to Sara Faatz for WintellectNOW (similar to Pluralsight). I do training for them. Sara is a Hampton local too. Tell her you know me and she'll HOOK YOU UP.

Just a quick update, No Starch Press sent us one copy of The Principle's of Object-Oriented JavaScript by Nicholas Zaka. It came in today along with a couple of stickers.
@bmf - I haven't reached out to Pluralsight or WintellectNow so if you want to add them to your list, go for it! That's great about the book! We can raffle it off at the April Meetup.
Howdy folks! Quick update:
Treehouse has agreed to give our members a free 1 month trial and I am looking into having a banner, with their logo, printed for our meetups. I'll add the logo and details to the wiki when I get a chance.
Code School has also agreed to sponsor us with some two day free trials and a handful of free 3 month memberships that we can give out. I'm still waiting to hear back on the finalized details, so more to come.
Haven't had a chance to reach out to Pluralsight or WintellectNow, but those are on my todo list. I also still want to pursue some local coffee houses, but I don't make it out to Norfolk much so I don't know what is good. I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have! :)
the websites gonna be flooded.
Awesome Job Brandon. Nice problem to have is having trouble giving out all the stuff :)
@stanzheng - That's my intent! :) The nice thing is tho, we'll hopefully have enough for all our meetings throughout the year. And I think, if we can get them, the local discounts will be a nice added bonus. I don't see many of the other meetups doing this, So hopefully we'll set a trend.
Also @1kevgriff & @metaskills If anything I am snagging for NorfolkJS interests you for the .Net and 757rb meetups, let me know. I'll be happy to share contacts, etc... Just let me know what you need.
That is really great @bmf! A Latte and Bean There here downtown are probably good places for your coffee house experiment :)
Thanks @lynnaloo, that is very nice of you. Anytime I hint to Clint at 757 Creative Space that we may have a larger meet up say, Grow Interactive, he really turns on the heat about how awesome that space will be in the future. Despite that I only mention places like Grow for specific talk/outreach events. That said, Clint's plans for the 3rd floor and spiral staircase, food and beer sound really interesting. Right now the space is kind of cramped. So I appreciate the offer and this topic is on my mind.
@bmf - I'll go ahead and contact Pluralsight tonight and get the ball-rolling there too. If you put the logos for the other sponsors you got in the gen-info repo then I'll add them as sponsors.
@bmf - http://www.packtpub.com - Packt Publishing has a User Group program like O'Reilly so I put a request in through their website.
@lynnaloo I added the Treehouse and Nostarch logos to to the gen-info repo. I've also contacted Code School to see if they are going to send us the links to their trial and give-away accounts.
Code School fiiiinally got back to me regarding sponsorship. They've given us (6) 3 month subscriptions that we can give out at meetings and a link for their 2 day trial we can give out to anyone in the group. w00t! I'll get the logo in gen-info and up on the blog in a bit.
Focal Press and PluralSight are now sponsors. We still need to connect with WintellectNOW.
@1kevgriff - this is the email address that is getting bounced back - sfaatz@wintellectnow.com
