Chat Room #59

Closed bmf closed 9 years ago

bmf commented 9 years ago

During the Meteor meet up @BretFisher mentioned that we should set up a chat room to facilitate JavaScript and Meteor discussions outside of our regular meetings. At one point we looked at setting up a chat room for the group, but that didn't seem to get much traction. Is there any interest in setting an IRC like chat room? @BretFisher mentioned Slack and that seems to be an interesting service. Anyone have an opinion on this?

lynnaloo commented 9 years ago

I really like Slack. We tried messing around with Gitter before but it didn't really work.

qwo commented 9 years ago

yeah since slack accounts are actually free and now support multiple organizations im all for slack.

the only caveat is it looks like its invite only at the moment by email so you would have to send a invite to people you want to access the community.

I'm down its also easy to this way have a place to talk and discuss js locally.

Ive been using Slack for 6 months and really enjoy it.

bmf commented 9 years ago

Any ideas on how we should set up access requests? You can do bulk invites based on e-mail address, but I'm not aware of us having a mailing list. Meetup.com doesn't allow you to pull theirs either as far as I can tell.

qwo commented 9 years ago

dunno. adding to the future meetup members join in "do you want to join our slack, email here" type deal sounds oK.

also a thread or a message on each event description to reach out to someone able to add them.

I think if someone wants to be added they will seek it out :)

lynnaloo commented 9 years ago

I think put the info on the website and Github general info pages and mention it on Twitter and at the meetups. People can gradually start joining as they're interested.

qwo commented 9 years ago

i agree. it definitely should be an opt in and any member can join.

who wants to make the channel.

We're using Slack at xTuple and I think it's great for communication. I like this idea.

BretFisher commented 9 years ago

Totally onboard with Slack chat.

The one barrier to Slack as mentioned, is the signup process is a bit painful. There are lots of Slack add-on's out there so I bet we can tweak one to our needs. This one has people fill out a webform and it posts their request to Slack so we know to add them.

Before we create it:

Another thought, maybe too big of one to bother with at this point, but, what if instead of something like norfolkjs.slack.com, we instead created a team for 757dev.slack.com and offer admin rights to other group leaders. Then you end up with channels like #javascript #.net, #ruby #meteor etc. I'm looking forward to @1kevgriff bringing some awesome to http://757devcon.com/ and there could be a #757devcon channel, a #polyglot, and more. The main benefit here is it's inclusionary and a one-stop-shop for local dev's to find their community chat. Maybe that idea is DoA because the need isn't there, but thought I'd throw that out before we create something.

lynnaloo commented 9 years ago

+1 That's a really great idea, @BretFisher. I think it's worth creating 757dev now. Even if it starts out with just a couple channels, it gives us a goal of where we want to be. There's real need for communication between group organizers so that could be a channel as well.

BretFisher commented 9 years ago

liftoff, and you all should have an invite: http://757dev.slack.com

BretFisher commented 9 years ago

people can request access here: http://norfolkjsslacksignup.meteor.com/

metaskills commented 9 years ago

Thanks! Is there anyway I can put a link to slack on the 757rb.org site?

qwo commented 9 years ago

Meteor is akin to Heroku, you can clone down brets source here https://github.com/BretFisher/slack-signup and then publish it at at a 757rbsignup.meteor.com of sorts.

it looks like that way for now even thought right now they all post to the general channel and you would have to make an auth token with your admin key

qwo commented 9 years ago

are we committed to making a signup meteor landing site for each group? ie norfolkjs, 757rb, hrnug, hrphp etc? they all go to the same place so maybe a dropdown about where did you hear about this from etc so it would be like.

stanley email: dev.stanzheng@gmail.com heard about this from .. 757rb
BretFisher commented 9 years ago

Actually what am I thinking. We need one for the whole team, not a norfolkjs one etc. I'll redeploy as 757devslacksignup and post back when ready

qwo commented 9 years ago

+1 @BretFisher! :) on the same brainlength

lynnaloo commented 9 years ago

Sounds good to me

Please please update on how we can link to this. I loved hanging out in slack with 757dev'ers today.

BretFisher commented 9 years ago

I'm in dc for the weekend but plan to have this updated before the week starts.
