Noto Mono: consider making various ASCII symbols used in code and the terminal more prominent #122

Open madig opened 5 years ago

madig commented 5 years ago

Font

https://github.com/googlei18n/noto-fonts/blob/b43f0b84178984753119089cae040f5c39508f07/phaseIII_only/unhinted/variable-ttf/NotoSansMono-VF.ttf

Issue

Various symbols used in code and on the command line look less prominent than they should. Curly braces look feeble even.

This includes () [] {} <> ~ * + - / ' " and `

Screenshot

Compare Hack, which designs these symbols very prominently:

And Noto Mono (ignore the thin text in the terminal pane, something seems to fall over while selecting the bold instance):

Resources

The Hack people faced similar problems, see the links in https://github.com/IBM/plex/issues/99#issuecomment-353791811.

I do not have this problem with the curly brackets (it might depends on your font settings), but I agree that a few characters could benefit of being more recognizable, like ~ which really looks too flat.

@madig is this issue still reproducible? and is this issue specific to code and the terminal? @marekjez86 what is the status of variable font?

madig commented 4 years ago

Did a quick check and while I see the symbols fine, they could still be made a bit more prominent.

@marekjez86 any opinion on the current status?
