Yes, I noticed this a long time ago when prepping the VFs originally. I didn't have the time to check and since they had already been there in the previous version I left them alone for this version, but have removed them for the next version. I don't see over 800 in total, though. Could that be from not checking CMap format 14? Then it might make sense, but I only see 96 right now in the JP subset.

Sans/Variable/TTF/Subset/NotoSansJP-VF.ttf
(and possibly other fonts), a large number of glyphs are present in the subsetted fonts but do not seem to be reachable through encoding or any substitution rules. They appear to be language-specific variant forms which were not subsetted out. Some examples are:(There are over 800 in total.)
