Inaccurate U+101FD PHAISTOS DISC SIGN COMBINING OBLIQUE STROKE #11

Closed dscorbett closed 1 year ago

Font

NotoSansSymbols2-Regular.ttf

Where the font came from, and when

Site: https://noto-website-2.storage.googleapis.com/pkgs/NotoSansSymbols2-unhinted.zip Date: 2018-03-01

Font Version

Version 2.000;GOOG;noto-source:20170915:90ef993387c0

Issue

Noto Sans Symbols2 consistently renders U+101FD as an oblique stroke below and to the right of its base sign. On the Phaistos disc, however, it consistently touches the sign and is typically centered below it. Its angle differs from sign to sign; it is sometimes even vertical.

When I look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phaistos_Disc#/media/File:%CE%94%CE%AF%CF%83%CE%BA%CE%BF%CF%82_%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82_%CE%A6%CE%B1%CE%B9%CF%83%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%8D_%CF%80%CE%BB%CE%B5%CF%85%CF%81%CE%AC_%CE%91_6380.JPG (and on the reverse of it [but needs to be searched for at other locations]), I see U+101FD PHAISTOS DISC SIGN COMBINING OBLIQUE STROKE on the left of some of the "sentences" on the PHAISTOS DISC [i.e., right on the mirror image]. It appears to be centered as opposed to the right.

The stroke is centered, but the other problems remain. It still doesn’t look how it does on the Phaistos Disc.

dscorbett commented 4 years ago

@nizarsq, please reopen this. There is still a problem.

@marekjez86 for opinion

@dscorbett : where did you get Phaistos Disc for reference?

dscorbett commented 4 years ago

I used the images on Wikipedia.

This seems to be the referenced image, compared with what Noto does: image image

The combining stroke now correctly stabs the pedestrian in the knee. shape

dscorbett commented 1 year ago

U+101D0 was just one example; it wasn’t meant to the focus of the bug report. The oblique stroke should always touch the base sign. Other signs which are attested with the stroke are U+101D4, U+101D6, U+101D7, U+101E1, U+101E9, U+101F2, U+101F5, and U+101FA.

This is better but still not done.

The stroke should touch U+101D4, U+101D6, U+101F5, and U+101FA.

The stroke should be repositioned on U+101E1 on U+101E9 to match the disk.
