courville commented 2 years ago

I tested on fire 8 HD and did not reproduce. Could I get a full logcat to understand what happens?

Mellorman commented 2 years ago

I'll help if I can. I'm new to Github but if you can point me to some instructions on how to generate a logcat, I'll give it my best shot :-)

courville commented 2 years ago

@Mellorman sure: check https://github.com/nova-video-player/aos-AVP/wiki/Debugging and get full "adb logcat" of the device. I suspect something upsetting the wifi driver/firmware triggered by nova yielding to this behavior. Perhaps a fireOS unstability on the fire 10 HD. There is nothing in nova requesting wifi shutdown.

Mellorman commented 2 years ago

Well, that was educational. Logs are too long to fully post here, is this enough to get you started?

Sorry for the late reply. I can see in the logs that indeed the wifi driver of the fire 10 is crashing. This should really not happen. Perhaps nova triggers a platform bug but not really nova's fault... Perhaps linked to MDNS discovery process.

Mellorman commented 1 year ago

No problem, I don't expect a personalised service :)

My Fire tablet has recently had a new release of code, I'll try re-installing Nova and see if the problem persists.

courville commented 1 year ago

Please share if it interacts better with the device.

BudB8996 commented 1 year ago

I also have the same exact problem running fire OS 7.3.2.4 I've uninstalled and pre-installed several times. I also rebooted the WiFi router. Nothing changed

I contacted Amazon and they said it was a vendor issue. My fire HD 8 has the same program and it works fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions to try? Thanks

Mellorman commented 1 year ago

Please share if it interacts better with the device.

Sadly no, still problematic with 7.3.2.6

courville commented 1 year ago

OK let's see if this is MDNS discovery related: could you please test this build and reports if it kills wifi? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-UAS7hfb-UHHBXcILJArqkaDWflOoyUy/view?usp=sharing

Sorry, nope, still breaking the wi-fi. I might try and video myself launching the app and the effect on the wi-fi, as there is a set sequence (wi-fi is killed, wi-fi comes back with "no bars", wi-fi gets full bars but can't connect, and repeat). At the same time the app starts without UPnP and SMB options, then populates them briefly, then removes them (and repeat).

BudB8996 commented 1 year ago

I tried to install apk. But it keeps coming up app not installed.

BudB8996 commented 1 year ago

I tested it by uninstalling the original nova. I then installed the test app and it installed. When starting Nova I have the same results. WiFi bouncing on and off and then locks off until you exit the program. Then It turns on and works normal. One thing I found that it does work 1 in 10 times you try it.

courville commented 1 year ago

@BudB8996 thanks for testing. I was worth the try but does not bring us light yet.

Perhaps the SMB/UPnP discovery process triggers this scanning the localnet...

I did some more testing. Here is what I saw. On start-up it kills the wifi. I continued to watch the movie, about ten 10 minutes later I turned the WiFi on and it stayed connected. After watching the movie I stopped the movie it still was connected until I hit the back key. It went off-line. I guessing it is something to do with trak connection.

Hope this helps

BudB8996 commented 1 year ago

I think the problem might be with trak. I did some testing and found after watching a movie for a couple of min. You turn your WiFi on and will stay connected until you hit the back key. Probably trying to update play position in trak. It will kill the connection.

courville commented 1 year ago

@BudB8996 easy test for you would be to disable the trakt sync in nova options.

Mellorman commented 1 year ago

I don't use Trakt, but I get the wi-fi off/on headaches, so I would suggest it isn't related to Trakt.

And here's an interesting (YMMV) thing... if I turn Wi-Fi off, then launch Nova, I can't turn Wi-Fi back on again while Nova is running. Not sure if that's a useful diagnostic or not?

dallasdondarrion commented 1 year ago

Yeah, I don’t think it’s Trakt related because as soon as I install the app and open it, without having signed into Trakt/enabling sync, it still turns the wifi off.

courville commented 12 months ago

Hi, getting back on this problematic issue. Could you please help me checking if when disabling nova samba discovery it will not cause the fire hd to turn off wifi? For this task I put two nova apk to test:

dallasdondarrion commented 12 months ago

I just tested them out. Installed the first apk (no samba discovery version) and the WiFi stayed on. I then went to Network Shortcuts, clicked "Add indexed folder by URI" and typed in my share path. My media was added and the WiFi continued to stay on.

I then installed the second apk on top of the first and the WiFi started to turn off again.

Also, the timing of this development was great. Literally an hour before this I decided to finally give up on Nova for my Fire HD after all this time and installed Kodi which sucks for tablets/touch screens. Then I saw your comment and now the first apk you listed works perfectly so far. Thanks for the hard work, courville.

courville commented 12 months ago

@dallasdondarrion thanks for your testing and confirmation that samba discovery is the culprit. Samba discovery is composed of a TCP, an UPD and an MDSN discovery. I will provide a version with the capability of disabling each of them in nova settings for you to test to narrow down the one upsetting the fire HD WiFi drivers (and it should not thus should be fixed by Mediatek in reality). Stay tuned.

Mellorman commented 12 months ago

Yes, I get the same results. Can you just clarify - did you just disable SMB discovery, or SMB support altogether?

SMB still works if you do it like how I mentioned.

courville commented 12 months ago

Let's push the experiment further please. Here is an apk where in nova settings you can disable independently SMB discovery using TCP, UDP, mDNS in shared folders section. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OaCKbtFuhILo7qCdgFOIYrlMUj4lTuM6/view?usp=sharing Could you please disable one by one each discovery and check which one upsets the fire hd tablet wifi drivers?

dallasdondarrion commented 12 months ago

Tested them out one by one. Disabling UDP discovery is the one that keeps the Wifi from shutting off, so that seems to be the culprit. Disabling the other two had no effect on the Wifi turning on and off.

courville commented 12 months ago

@dallasdondarrion thanks for the testing and reporting of the findings. I will for now only make visible in settings the disabling of SMB UDP discovery to help devices with faulty WiFi drivers such as the Fire 10 HD. The other options will remain hidden in the advanced settings. At least it will provide a way for users experiencing the instability to use nova.

SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE to Amazon device department: it would be nice that you fix your WiFi driver issues (with Mediatek?).

Mellorman commented 12 months ago

Wait... don't do that...

My experience is different from @dallasdondarrion https://github.com/dallasdondarrion - like him, I find that the UDP discovery breaks the wi-fi, but the TCP discovery also bounces the wi-fi, the difference being that it recovers. Using mDNS alone I get no interruption to the wi-fi; adding TCP disables and re-enables wi-fi; adding UDP cripples wi-fi altogether.

If you want to reduce the amount of clutter, maybe a "use mDNS discovery only" option?

Thanks for driving this, it's much appreciated (and it's nice to be using Nova again!)

@Mellorman Hm, I wonder why your TCP discovery interaction is different than mine. I'm guessing because my Fire HD is 11th gen and yours is 9th gen? Whereas you say only having mDNS enabled works and that when you add TCP it shuts off your wifi but then recovers, adding/disabling TCP while SMB is already disabled for me has no effect on the Wifi. Good thing you tested as well.

@courville Thanks for the hard work. It's nice to be able to use Nova on my tablet.

dallasdondarrion commented 12 months ago

@courville Slight hiccup with the release candidate version I just installed. Going into preferences closes Nova. Retested by uninstalling then reinstalling, same outcome. Lol you clearly can't catch a break, sorry dude.

courville commented 12 months ago

Ok my bad. Pulled out the release for a "try again" later today. Thanks for reporting

courville commented 12 months ago

This is a good suggestion.

courville commented 12 months ago

For reference in the future, TCP discovery was needed on ChromeOS at a point to be able to discover the SMB servers on the network and cope with NAT transversal.

Thus on ChromeOS, discovery with mDNS does not work, and it works either with TCP xor UDP (which is strange).

courville commented 12 months ago

https://github.com/nova-video-player/aos-AVP/releases/tag/v6.2.28 available.

dallasdondarrion commented 12 months ago

Oh, god. You're going to hate me, lol. So there are two things happening.

1: It appears for my Fire HD version (11th gen as opposed to Mellorman's 9th gen) that TCP needs to be enabled for SMB to be discoverable. Even with TCP enabled, it still doesn't show my Workgroup, ie. DondarrionsPC, but it does list my PC via IP address under Nogroup, ie. 192.168.yadda.yadda. Only with UDP enabled will it show my Workgroup, but of course the Wifi will shut on and off.

2: When clicking on my PC's IP address under Shared Folders (SMB) and typing in my credentials, it states "You must specify a valid remote address."

With all that being said, I can still index via URI by typing the path of smb://DondarrionsPC/Movies or smb://192.168.yaddayadda/Movies and typing in my credentials.

courville commented 12 months ago

@dallasdondarrion, perhaps SMB discovery will not work in your case and you will need to input the IP address of your SMB server (remember to make it fixed and not dynamic) and create a network shortcut with nova (not using the SMB tile/menu).

And your point 2 is certainly a bug.

dallasdondarrion commented 12 months ago

@courville Yeah. I mean, I can still index via URI from the Shared folders menu or the Networks shortcuts menu, but trying to access my shares from either Shared folders with SMB or Network shortscut/Browse A Network Share with SMB and typing in my credentials comes back with the "You must specify a valid remote address."

But like I said, I can index from either Shared folders or Network Shortcuts using the URI method and typing in the SMB path and my credentials, so that works perfectly for me as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks for all your hard work. Love this app.

DrakenFX commented 12 months ago

Tested both apks you posted at Reddit and the no-samba build fix the turning WiFi off when the app is in use, once I install the 2nd APk posted in the same reddit post , the issue started again.

Seems like , something with the Samba discovery implementation is breaking WiFi when the app is open.

courville commented 12 months ago

@DrakenFX, progress has been made on the topic since the reddit post on this github issue with new apk to test:

I am interested if the above conclusions apply to your case.

did some testing by disabling and enabling a couple times and also closing the app and looks like by Disabling SMB UDP discovery , does the trick for me on both devices.... i'll give you posted if that change in the future

@dallasdondarrion @DrakenFX @Mellorman, can you please after configuring nova with udp scanning off (only this one) and a reboot of the tablet, confirm that wifi is not acting flacky (reboot is important)? Why I am asking this is to keep tcp scanning which helps identifying SMB servers in cases mDNS is not successful (it is the case on some servers).

Mellorman commented 12 months ago

Okay, will do, but it won't be until a bit later.

And I'm back. So yes, as you say, once the app is configured and the tablet is rebooted, the network interface remains stable even with TCP enabled.

It's a wrap! Print it! etc.
