Frankly, given the abundance of SSDs these days, I would go for making an SD card image that is "only" the equivalent of the debian netinst or live images. This might be a separate issue though.
But hey, I just followed your scripts with a novena I recently acquired and BOOM I'm now running an up-to-date debian, it's great!
Having an installer-only might be a good idea. It could be put on a USB and used to install to an SD card too.

When upgrading is finally done and easy for people we need to create a disk image people can easily format or install. Ideally this would be done according to whichever distro's standards, for example an installer for Debian or an image for Arch Linux ARM.
